Misfire from cold - FIXED - 4.4 v8 M62 engine

For the collective good and sanity of other FFRR owners, I just wanted to advise the following symptoms and fix.

Over the last year I had an intermittent misfire from cold. It disappeared when engine got to operating temperature. Car done approx 90000 miles.

The short story - I have just changed the two PCV to Oil Separator to Crankcase pipes - well known for going mushy and well reported on this forum - search "PCV".

The Symptoms were
1. Misfire from cold or even partially warm, cleared after around 3 minutes.
2. Misfire disappeared for a while but returned when I did a month of very short journeys (2 mile trips)
3. Pipes did feel a little soft but still looked intact and had sprung back to shape after squeezing
4. The Fault Readings (via RSW AllComms) before replacement below
0x136 P0306 Misfire detected cylinder 6.
0x13E P1300 Multiple misfire fault.
0x1BC P0455 DM-TL small leak (1.0mm).

Changed pipes today (had bought pipes over a year ago but not immediately done because pipes still felt servicable) and what a difference - car so much smoother and no misfire now. Cool

Interior of the pipes looked a little rough like someone had used a cheese grater inside it, but not too bad.

Hope this helps someone out. Now to change the actual PCV valve and clear the cyclone. Howard

Just to update this thread ....

Well the misfire did return - it seems its disappearance was coincidental with the change of PCV pipes.

In the meantime I also changed the PCV and the other two small hoses (small one from PCV to Oil Sump Pipe, and Oil Separator to Sump Pipe).

So now new PCV valve and all pipework changed.

The next obvious thing to me was either coils or spark plugs. When I bought the car, its service record showed it had just had a set of new plugs, so I thought I would swap the coils from 5 & 6 over to see if the misfire on 6 followed the coil to 5.

Misfire remained at 6. OK - lets have a look at plug 6.

Then ensued 2 days to remove plug 6 (see separate thread http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic33976.html for how to remove a stiff spark plug and loose several hours of your life), which was in a right old state.

This plug was still old original BMW / Bosch FGR7DQP one so had never been changed (rest were NGK)- probably because it was so stiff to undo - all other mechanics thought I ain't touching that one.

So 8 new plugs (NGK BKR 6EQUP) in and car feels like new again Very Happy Howard

Those two small pipes at the back of the engine ( not the ones on the top ) are a pig of a job !!

Actually not so bad - I have a few tips on changing the PCV valve which I have yet to write up properly.

I think it may make it easier for those that follow. Howard

Not having one to hand, I gave mine a good clean out with brake cleaner, thats the one on the left side of the engine as you look from the front that is shaped like a funnel and not the one on the back, middle of the engine... had one of those !
