As Scarey says, forget worrying about MPG. If you are doing a long long haul then sit back and enoy the car's comfort, set the cruise at 70 and let it pur along at 1850rpm and it should settle down on the average mpg setting at somewhere in the region of 29-30mpg, a bit less if there are a few hills to climb, a lot better if it is flat lands you are driving. Just don't try to drive it like a GTi, then you will get low to mid 20's - leave GTI driving to the Saxo boys. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes |

My question wasn't purely about fuel use. I seem to remember many years ago when I had an Isuzu Trooper which was turbocharged. When accelerating it made a pleasing noise as the turbo cut in and you seemed to feel the extra push. Since then I've driven diesel Beemers so have forgotten all this turbo stuff.

It's a miss conception amongst drivers that boost is bad for fuel consumption. The reality is that without boost engines have to rev harder, and more of the fuel they burn is used to turn the engine than develop power.
