a Royal Marine pal of mine is looking for some new transport while he is home. He would love my Rangie (but isn't gonna get it!! ) but would like one that is reliable but not necessarily in good condition in or out. Petrol or Diesel.

alternatively he will go for a good/reliable P38.

Budget is c.£3k (I know! )

Any steers welcome (and a gift to this site obviously!!)

you are not going to find a decent car for that, forget the p38 they are so full of annoying peculiarities...and doom.
if you are handy with spanners, and that's all this car needs, you could have yourself a really nice low milage car, it has been stolen recovered, log book/hpi will show this, but easy to get secondhand black front wings, (bolt on) and an exhaust, a diff, and a few small bits. I reckon, you could have it going for a little over £3k. after you have chipped him a little whilst throwing out your right hand... look again at the milage, check this is genuine. 65k!

with all the parts delivered from a dismantler, you need about 2 days spannering to be 'in the fold'.
