Mobile wifi

This is partly FFRR related and partly not, hence the reason for posting in the off topic section......

I have mobile wifi as a factory fit option on my L405, which is based on 3G network technology. I also have a 3G mifi device that I use in my other car. I normally buy preloaded 3G sims from Amazon that come with 12Gb. However, I've recently noticed that the preloaded 4G versions are cheaper. My question is, therefore, can you use a 4G sim in a 3G device? Would such a card simply default down to 3G speeds, or would it not work in the first place?

I could buy a cheap one with a small amount of data on it as a test, but wondered whether anyone knowledgable on this site knows the answer and can save me the bother? I did try a search, but couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

Paul.

Thumbs Up

I have a 4G sim in an Iphone and as I live in an area without 4G it only works on 3G locally, as soon as 4G is available it reverts to 4G.
Not all 3G devices are 4g compatible however.

Correct! A 4G SIM will just "roll back" to 3G.

I have 2 x Mifis.........A Huawei E586 (3G) and a E5776 (4G)

I used to buy the 3 3G SIMs with 3GB pre-loaded, they used to be £9.99 but they have risen in price so I now go for the EE SIM preloaded with 6GB, Amazon sell them for £14.99. When they run out, I just throw them away.

Incidentally, the E5776 is great. 15 hours battery life and very fast 4G. 2006 4.2 SC

Sorry OP but can I ask a question on a similar subject.
Family (teenagers) are moaning they want wifi and internet in France. (otherwise they have to sit outside the supermarket using their wifi which is getting embarrassing)
We are not there long enough to justify having a landline connected and a router.
However I had though about a mobile wifi and data sim.
Any recommendations/advice

Thanks

I use Vodafone with their Eurotraveller package. That costs £3 a day but you get to use all your UK data allowance when in the Eurozone.

However, Vodafone data is not the cheapest. I mostly stay with them because my Employer has Vodafone pico-cells in all their office meaning I get full 4G at all sites. You might want to explore alternative providers.

Id look at something like this.
http://www.3grouterstore.co.uk/3G/Huawei-E...-Port.html

with this

http://www.three.co.uk/_standalone/PricePl...0491027878

And then set the Huawei up to VPN back to the UK at your house or such like and job done. Can even test it all in the UK before going and it saves you a small fortune as french data isn't cheap without a contract Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

As an aside does the 405 not have a 4G device in it, is it purely 3G only?!? Talk about old skool! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Spectrum wise you should be ok with any device you buy in the UK.
Cost and charge wise they are different beasts and will roaming charge accordingly.

If you buy a device in the UK that's locked to EE here, I'd think it's highly unlikely that it will let you use an EE France sim in it.

A small mifi will do the same job but won't do the VPN bit more thank likely so it would automatically fall into the tethered part of a plan. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Why not just turn the personal hotspot on your phone? Can then use the data bundled in your mobile plan..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Because most won't allow it in their roaming Sad
Those that allow it in the uk only allow a very small amount and then charge a fortune for it. And kids these days soon go through a few gig like an ff thru fuel 😄 FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Could you not use Orange France Prépayé? Get it in any of their boutiques in the supermarket areas. SFR do a prépayé too.

Use my Orange Fr account so am not au fait with the costs. Have a root through their website. https://boutique.orange.fr/default.aspx John

Andy, This appears to be Orange's prepaid offers. http://boutique.orange.fr/mobile/recharges...Control213

Don't know if they are of interest. Depends what your youngsters want to do - SMS, surf the net etc?

The Max loooks reasonable offer. Depends how it compares with a UK package used in France.

SFR seem to offer similar. http://www.sfr.fr/telephonie-mobile/sfr-la-carte.html#

In either case some of the offers are for access through hot spots.

Something for your to look at. Thumbs Up John
