Competition??

Jaguar's F-Pace will be on show at Frankfurt at the end of this month.

Looks as if potential to erode LR sales especially 405 and Sport.

Probably be better on road and handling with smoother ride quality.

For those who do not venture off road or tow, does this look a better option considering Jaguar seems to be ahead of LR in infotainment etc.

Also avoids the move to up-market German derived 4x4 products if you are patriotic these days.

If you spend most of your time on road /motorway/school run with just the odd off-road, this may be the choice for 2016.

Worth considering perhaps, especially if competitively priced. Any views?

I really like this, and what Tata are doing with Jaguar in general Thumbs Up

I think the F-Pace sits somewhere between the Evoque and the Sport rather than the 405.

Not sure.

The market is already pretty saturated with 4x4s. Every manufacturer seems either to have one or is about to launch one.

Land Rover have thrived in that environment. Possibly because, if you buy the whole 4x4 experience thing, then Land Rover are The Daddy. So everyone else comes across as a bit of a wannabe. The only thing Land Rover need to be careful about is keeping the shooting lot on side. The arrivistes like the Rangie because Dukes and Earls use them to reach the farthest parts of their estates (they actually use a keeper's beaten up Defender most of the time but the image sticks). It's a delicate balance - enough bling to attract the nouveau riche, enough rugged sensible features to keep the huntin', shootin', fishing set on board.

Probably Porsche are more worried - the Cayenne is exactly in the segment you describe - car like 4x4. But I think it has cornered that market pretty well.

And Range Rover's infotainment is a version (poor version for some reason) of the same system used by its Tata-owned sister company, Jaguar. I sat in an F-type the other day and most of the interface was identical.

The one that might make more of an impact is the Bentley Bentanglegayerfeckinstupidname. The Rangie was the only serious choice for the English shooting gent (or someone who aspires to that profile) with ultra deep pockets. Got £100k lying around doing nothing? Ship in a Rangie. There was no other serious alternative. Now there is the Bentley. It will be an impressive piece of kit - VW doesn't do failure.

Agreed. Ugly, expensive and a stupid name. But that worked for Porsche...

Funnily enough, I think Porsche will take more of a hit than Land Rover. I think it will be the very rich who want a snobby brand oneupmanship and have more money than sense who bought many of the Cayenne turbos. They'll buy the Betyoucantspellitcanya instead (assuming they've got the 200 large to hand).

It looks too small in the boot (like the Porsche), the W12 engine is going to appeal to the speed brigade, the thing will be tailored to on-road driving would be my bet. I assume the chassis is Toerag/Cayenne based. Smack bang in Porsche's back yard.

I think the Bentayga is based on the Audi Q7 floorpan. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Yes, VW Group MQB platform - you can see that the front door profiles etc. are identical.

2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Nara Bronze

The f pace is Porsche Mecan size supposedly so nowhere near competition for either the sport or 405.

The new Bentley however might sneak some sales from the autobiography models and at last gives something to move up to rather than buying another range rover! Thumbs Up '14.5 SDV8 Nara Bronze for sale

I think F-Pace is based on Evoque platform so no competition for the L405 which is still in a world of its own, I can't see someone going from L405 to this Bentley SUV apart from people with more money than taste. Sure it will sell in the Emirates where bathrooms come standard with gold taps. Different buyers for a different car.
