think I might need a new gearbox

As above. Had trans fail safe a couple of times since having the oil and filter changed, but only when pulling away.
Recently the car pulls in 1st and holds then shunts into 2nd and quickly into 3rd. No big deal but yesterday on way down the a51 duel carriageway the tfs came on when I was doing approx 55 to 60 mph and it didn't seem right as if the tc wasn't locking up. Stopped and switched off to reset it. All ok. I went to see neil smith at cannock to get the codes read and module 2 code came up and tc code. Tony test drove it but said he didn't think I need worry just yet, but something definitely on its way out.
this box according to my receipt off last owner has done just over 60k, so knew its probably going to go soon Big Cry
arrh well such is life.
Good job I saved a little bit. Thumbs Up

Hi stan, tbh I think I would go for the sooner rather than later option. Tfs has appeared twice now since having the codes cleared and that was at a steady speed car hasn't done it before. I'll give it a week or two and see how it goes but I know I'm on borrowed time.

Are you going for a full overhaul or a new/refurbished box ??

If you are going for an overhaul then I'd suggest to do it as soon as possible to prevent any damage to the box increasing / spreading due to metal bits going around the system and increasing the amount of parts that need replacement. The "damage" may or may not already been done to "the rest" of the box if you catch my drift. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hi ebajema, will have a chat with neil what the best option is. I really would love to move up to the tdv8 but can't justify it yet, maybe next year.
My initial thought was to get rid and trade in for anything, even considered going over to the dark side, kia sorrento, but having thought about it my rr has been a good car in the 16 months I've owned it and making a snap decision on another rr wouldn't be the best way, I may end with more than a refurbished gearbox.
Thumbs Up

Cheers mate, had my eyes wide open when I looked at buying the td6 and knew more than likely I would end up with a new box.
tfs has again appeared at least 5 times over weekend all at steady speed between 40 and 60mph no juddering or thuds so I think tc is slowly breaking up. There's a rather big testing hill not too far from me at weston near county show ground and coming back that way thought I would see if it held ok going up, it did so no slip yet, although she doesn't seem to like cruise control seems a tad revy at 50mph.
Thanks again will post and let you know how it goes. Thumbs Up
not looking forward to using my sons audi though its a nice car quattro 2.5 v6 estate 03 plate much prefer the nice command seating position of the rr and getting wifey in and out well that's another story. Laughing

Just thought I'd let you know, my gearbox went yesterday and I ended up going to transmission specialist in a tow truck. Sad
gearbox started slipping , luckily a car park a few yards away and managed to pull in.
Diagnostics read same as before gear monitor 2 and tc monitor. Will keep you updated with more information as the teardown proceeds.
Greg. Thumbs Up

Good luck with the work - guess you are using Neil @ Cannock? I was thinking of dropping mine down to him to do gearbox oil/filters change so would be good to hear about how you find the work quality there.

Hope it does not cost too much for you - you need money for other work the FF probably needs
Thumbs Up Howard

Thanks for the reply lads. Well he's dropped the pan and oil, clean as a whistle no metallic debris . Sad we all concur that something is amiss. So I've instucted him to carry on and now we have gone this far do the tc and whatever else it needs. Keep my fingers crossed for a good result Thumbs Up

Update.
Metallic debris found in the filter, and tc not in good condition.
Box is on the bench being stripped down.
I read RRPhils teardown until my eyes were bleeding last night. Thank you RRPhil for posting such a detailed description of the gearbox. Bow down Bow down Bow down
it was just to familiarise myself with what is being explained to me over the phone and I could grasp what the problems are.
hope to get full update maybe tomorrow Thumbs Up

Another update.
Car is ready to collect.
Recon tc , 2 springs in accumulators broken, clutch plates worn down to metal at least 2 solenoids replaced and valves.
to be honest quite a bit when it was stripped down, a lot to take in on the phone call couldn't remember it all.
I will be so glad to be driving my ffrr again.

Tomorrow is a day I will cherish. Thumbs Up
just to say a massive thank you to RRPhil for his excellent description of the GM5L40E gearbox, without that I wouldn't have a clue what neil was talking about on the phone. Cheers phil. Bow down Bow down Bow down
greg. Thumbs Up
