What comes with the tow bar?

I wonder if you guys can help. I have the tow bar structure fitted to the car and it looks like this (hopefully I will of uploaded a picture of the area below the rear bumper, showing the tow bar structure mounted on the chassis with a quick release facility for the tow bar end.

There is also a foam tray in the cubby hole on the right hand side of the boot, below the carpet panel. In the cubby hole is an unused quick release tow bar end. My question is; does the tow bar structure underneath come as standard? Also does the tow bar end in the cubby hole come as standard (or is only fitted if you have the structure below) or are both individual options?

The reason why I ask is that the dealer who I recently bought the car from said that the car doesn't have the quick release tow bar end and that as part of the deal they would buy me a new one which was around £600. Fair enough, that is adding value to the deal although it didn't occure to me to check to make sure that was actually the case. When the car arrived, I checked the cubby hole, and sure enough, there was an unused tow bar end. However, the moulded foam area around it was dirty with dust and grit and a few leaves.

I have had a number of problems with this dealer, which I won't go into here, but it occurred to me: perhaps if you have the tow bar structure fitted from new, it already comes with the detachable tow bar end and that moulded foam in the cubby hole. And actually, it was there all along and was just a little scam, to make it appear that they were contributing £600 to the deal when they were not. It is my first Range Rover and I took them on face value that the car did not have one.

I have since obtained a copy of the build sheet and there is no mention of a tow bar, but the tow bar structure underneath has clearly been there from day one. It's a 2010, Supercharged Autobiography. If it didn't come with the detachable tow bar, perhaps the foam housing and strap to hold, it is there in every car and that's why it doesn't look old. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography

Nope. All optional.

The bar comes in several parts

The large armature which attaches to the car with a large square hole into which bolts either
1.farmers drop plate
2.detachable bar

The detachable bar you seem to have is in 2 halves a part which bolts into the main armature square hole and the tow ball itself which is stored in the foam cubby.

The foam cubby is part of the tow bar kit, on cars with no bar there is a storage bucket in its place.

None of this is standard, if it has the armature it has one or other of the above types of tow bar, if it has the bit of the detachable bolted into the square hole (as in your pic) in the armature then it will have had the full detachable kit at some point, as they don't come separately. It may be that the previous owner removed the detachable tow ball part, but t unlikely. Also they aren't £600......

The detachable part of the kit is available new from Pf jones for about £200 for both parts. The whole kit and kaboodle is £383 with the armature!! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks for a quick response, I appreciate it.

So here's a photo of the part that fits in the square hole in the armature with the safety pin.

And here is the end removed from the cubby hole.

So I have all the parts. However, the fact that both the large armature and fitting in the square hole were installed from new and that it has the foam area for the tow eye in the cubby hole, which is also not new; unless the previous owner 'lost' the towing eye.......it was there all along because you wouldn't fit the two parts underneath and not have the towing eye in the cubby hole? 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography

you wouldn't have the bit underneath or the foam insert, without the tow ball.

so either the previous owner lost it or had it stolen or it was there all along. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks, that's what I thought. I forgot to add, that I became suspicious and asked for a receipt and they have given me one but it says 'internal purposes' It is for 'Kit - Tow Bracket' LVUB000730 (anyone know if that is for the whole tray /foam / towing eye complete).

I have just had a close look at the foam mounting for the removable towing eye in the cubby hole and it definitely not new, the strap buckle is tarnished / lightly corroded, the foam worn and the bolts that support the tray are not new. I have now looked closely at the wear on the foam and there are corresponding marks in the paint on the metal towing eye itself, where they have fretted slightly, due to movement of the car, over the past five years. I have been had and its a main dealer and this is just the tip of the iceburg.

Thanks again. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography

That part no is for the detachable set; the bit which bolts into the armature, the ball, the red cap, the foam insert, the bolts and the tow ball cap.

If it is a MD then the price is probably about right though. As the genuine LR boxed parts are probably that much. The Bar is made by Westfalia, and the same parts are available in westfalia boxes for the prices I said above. Have a look at pfjones.co.uk. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It does look like that but actually, that was me trying to work out what was corrosion and what was mud, so I have wiped it down with WD 40, so it looks better in the photo than it actually is.

northernmonkeyjones - thank you very much for the information, really helpful indeed. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography
