I love my country, the UK, but the time has come for me to move on and the plan is to move to France by the end of the Autumn. Last night I had 2nd thoughts about if I was doing the right thing.

This morning I happened to read a copy of the right wing Daily Mail. Now bearing in mind the Daily Mail exaggerates things and France has problems of it's own I found reasons to move on pages 3,4,5,12,14,16,17,19,22,24,25,32,33,35,37,- I stopped reading the paper at that point.

I'd go in a flash, quite a few places actually. 1st choice would be France, 2nd would be Oz. But add to the list South Africa, New Zealand, parts of the USA, Canada, jeez, a load of places that aren't the UK.

This country holds little for me nowadays but SWMBO doesn't want to leave her parents, understandably.

I made the move to France 30 years ago. First to Paris (working in Paree but living in the southern suburbs, sort of between Fontainebleau and Etampes), then to Aydat in the Massif Central (near Clermont-Ferrand), and finally down to the South of France to retire, a bit inland (about 20km North) from Saint-Raphael and Fréjus.
Never a moment’s regret …
And there are a few other ex-pats living in France on here too!

Each to their own and all that by I do find it peculiar how we see:

Foreigners coming to live and work here = Immigrants, bad, taking our jobs destroying our society etc

but

UK Citizens going to live and work abroad = Expats, Good, Making a better life for themselves, thriving community etc.

I like cycling on the continent and I know it's a popular destination, I believe even Greece was popular until recently - but I don't want to be called an "ex-pat" . So if I stay here, and I will, I'm looking forward to a decent pension, free bus pass, free NHS, decent beer, Manchester United and the odd sunny day which I like to appreciate,and of course all my mates live here. Geoff

Wish you well with the project. I know you have some Italian connections so you will be aware but France is not the UK with a different language which is a trap which a lot of Brits fall into.

It's very different - but great just the same.

I have already got a property (they are cheap) just planning my early retirement so I can go. lifestyle and weather why stay here to be overrun.
agree with Daily Mail comment it will depress you into self harming I stopped reading it.
Was in Milan this week locals are complaining about their property prices dropping. Mine was a blue one!

Seems to have stirred up a storm, my opinion is unchanged.
As for being "sad" to move we all have a choice so why do things which make you sad. I like this country and all it stands for and even though it has problems here I am and here I stay. I can't really see how France would be better, different yes, but better - really?
If I'm not an ex-pat does that make me a patriot, if so I'm pleased to be one.
Finally, don't make the mistake of comparing a British city with rural France, it's like comparing Marseille with the Cotswolds or the Derbyshire Dales.
I guess what I'm saying in a long winded way is I like it here.  Geoff
