Can anyone identify this???

Hi All,

Well, had the AB for a couple or 3 weeks now, thought id check the, what i thought was a detachable towbar. I dont know why i didnt check when i collected the car Big Cry but we are where we are, as they say.
Called the dealer and after some investigation, he thought that the valeters had removed it for picture purposes. Went and fetched it and i'm 100% sure it aint gonna fit.... Not sure if the armature is a gen LR.

Ive took some pics of the bar and the ball and i just need some help in identifying the main bar. I can get a Westfalia or Towsure one fitted with a new 13 pin (for the wobbly box) for around £500.00, but just need to know if i can buy a new detachable for the existing bar, if anyone can identify it...

Pics are below and many thanks in advance....

definitely not a genuine bar. 100% could be a brink or witter bar.(edit ..have had a look and its neither of these as far as i can tell) Its not looking like its a detachable one either.

to me it looks like the bolt which is in the subframe wants to come out and then the armature bolts inbetween the two plates using the 2 holes in the subframe through the 2 holes in the armature. Thumbs Up

I would take the pieces to your local tow bar fitter and see if he can put it together for a few beer tokens, it will be a whole lot cheaper than a new one Thumbs Up

If you do decide to go down the proper detachable route, the "proper" bar is a westfalia, with either the detachable head or the farmer hitch. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Many Thanks Northernmonkey Bow down

I think i'll get a new one fitted, when you're pulling a caravan that weighs nearly 2000kg unladen, then the missis puts her frocks shoes an handbags in, one needs to be confident with the towbar.

My brother in law has a 2005 FF and he has the westfalia, i think its ugly from the back, I'm led to believe the Towsure one is much tidier. Has anyone got a towsure one fitted?? 2011 TDV8 Autobiography

of course it's a detachable one. You can see in the photo it's been detached. Laughing

Seriously though could be anything, Witter, Towtrust, Brink, Bosal....

If it works and you don't mind it being ugly then you may as well keep it. Swapping to a westfalia armature and the cheaper farmers hitch is going to be about £300 in parts.

the westfalia one with the 'quick release' head leaves an ugly great lump under the bumper, but the farmers hitch with the pin release is ironically quicker to put on and off. The armature it's self is quite discrete.

I'd be more concerned about what the electrics were like, are they a dedicated kit? Either a Land-Rover/Westfalia one or the Britpart/Right connections one or is it a nasty load of bypass relays.

Thanks Zirconblue,

I honestly think the correct way is to just fit a new one. TBH I can normally do Nottingham to Seahouses (our fave haunt) in under 4hrs, so i'd like to think I've got a good towbar.

I have since found out that the previous owner had a small boat, so that explains the lack of the 2nd tow electrics.

Unless anyone else tells me otherwise, i'll fit the new one, Westfalia or Towsure. I'll keep you posted.

PF Jones are your best bet for a Westfalia, they do the proper westfalia 13 pin electrics too complete with module, which is the land rover kit, minus to plastic nuts to hold the module in place. I had to email them though as i could only find the after market electrics on their site.

I think the main attraction with the westfalia is you keep your rear towing eye as well as it being easier to source spare parts in the future.

No need for the module on the 2009> facelift cars, it is simply a plug in wiring unit. The car does need doing to the electrics though, and specifically to the type fitted. The "fag packet" had been done away with. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I can tell you exactly what that is cause I have one.

It's a towbar trust approved bar just like this one from Towbars Direct which is where I bought mine. The picture is not exact, its a generic pic on the item. For removal of all doubt I have added a photo of mine for you.
