Coolant Loss [SOLVED] - Bleed Screw EGR pipe

I have been mithering on about a secret coolant loss (@ 1pt every 300 miles or so) ever since I changed my thermostat and EGR thermostat a couple of years ago. The problem got worse a couple of weeks ago 2pts in 100 miles and there was coolant evidence dripping down through the undertray.

I dropped the undertray and could see coolant staining down the RHS (looking from the front) of the engine, so at least it wasn't the water pump or thermostat, but I could not see where it was coming from. Main concern it was the gearbox oil cooler area.

This morning decided to have a dismantle and a good look. Removed the front engine cover and lo and behold the answer. The bleed screw on the pipe coming from the EGR thermostat was weeping like a good 'un.

I shoved an empty 2 litre coke bottle under the coolant tank, and made up a "she wee" funnel out of a stout plastic bag, tucking the top end under the pipe/bleed screw. Started to release the screw bit by bit, collecting the coolant in the bottle. @ 1.7 litres came out before the flow subsided and I was able to completely remove the screw. Looked OK but clearly something wrong with it and the rubber washer.

I dived into my things I hadn't thrown away box and found the old EGR thermostat, whipped out the bleed screw from that, cleaned it up, added a bit of hylomars to both sides of the rubber washer and screwed it in. Ran engine up to temperature after replacing the lost coolant and no leaks.

Time will tell whether this completely solves things, more likely that fixing this will make it pop out somewhere else!! Twisted Evil .

well done,
from this fantastic thread I shall be adding another accessory to my boot, ie a small coke bottle, and some scisssors, to make her a 'she-wee' should the need arise. I remember those from (I think) dragon's den
