Land Cruiser, oh my!

So, whilst my FF is undergoing open heart surgery, I have been provided with a rental by JLR through Enterprise. It was a Toyota Land Cruiser, 3.0 diesel auto seven-seater.

In a word, dreadful! It is brand new, yet I fail to understand how these vehicles have gained such a reputation. I can only assume that this is in a similar vein to that of the Defender, because that is the category into which I would place it.

It is incredibly under powered and accelerates like a brick. The steering is vague and the thing wanders across the road; it gives little feed back to the driver and is frankly horrible to drive.

Construction-wise and practicality gives no cause for complaint, but for me it took only a 30 mile drive from Basingstoke to encourage me to phone the hire company and plead for something else. I now have a Volvo and am grateful!

Far more concerning is the need for 'open heart surgery' on Range Rover that's only 3 years old Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Two and a half on the road, registered in January 2013.

To be honest, this time around most people would have not bothered with it. I am a tad anal about such noises and considering that it was under warranty I wanted it checked out. Turns out it is still the oil pump that was replaced a couple of months ago.

You were driving a 3.0 DIESEL,put that in the full fat and what would you get? My sister has one in oz but they call it something else over there and it has a big gutsy PETROL in am sure its a 4 litre and it is great fun on the 20 mile sandy beach near where she lives, unfortunately I embarrassed myself bottoming it out in the sand ,was quite a job to get it out!!!

I had one of the new style land cruisers in 2009 for two years. Terrible to overtake with, you had to really plan ahead. The back seat also had a peculiar slope to it so it was difficult to get comfortable, the third row of seats had no legroom so could only be used comfortably for a toddler.

On the plus side - no mechanical or electrical issues whatsoever. It would be a fabulous car if they put some effort in to design and materials. I don't quite understand why they have low depreciation and are sought after! 2005 L322 Vogue Gold gone

They're called Prado.

I had a hire one when I was living in Oz 4 years ago. Did the job but the 3.9 V8 Discovery 1 that I owned out there would run rings around it in pretty much every respect. Si. <This is my name.

I think you've been unfortunate enough to have had the Prado which is the smaller engined Landcruiser. The 100 series (or Amazon up to 2008) or the 200 Series (V8 4.7 Petrol or 4.5 Diesel) are what you want to sit in. Incredible cars in their own right and very comfortable, but not the same level of refinement, gadgetry and high end luxury of the FFRR. More utilitarian... MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

My wife drives a Landcruiser V8. It's a hateful thing. Agricultural and lorry-like. She loves it though.
