I had a TDV8 and after bill after bill I decided to go back to my 1996 P38 4.6 HSE. Which has basically caused no issues in it's life to date. It is now on 137,000 miles on the original engine and original head. It had a light overhaul / restore by my local Land Rover dealer but that is all. If it gets to October with no monkey business then I am genuinely thinking of giving it the full ground up restore.
My point is, a cared for P38 is a good car. In relation to considering a D2 or a P38, look up chassis rot stories with a D2 and then compare to the P38. I think that will answer it for you on that point alone.
Would be happy to have a chat with you about the P38 if you think that might help, can tell you the total cost of the P38 bill wise from day one practically. In respect to the engine issues, prefer not to type up what I was told here in public but happy to pass on privately what I was told.
Good luck with what you decide. If someone is putting you off a P38 with horror stories, I would ask if they have owned one for a good length of time, whether it was properly serviced its whole life with a main dealer. Properly serviced that is.. and if either of those two is a negative, I'd ignore them and find someone with genuine experience.
Id have to say like any car, condition and previous care are the vital issues. Problem is of course there are the greedy sods appearing who because the classics are sky rocketing in price think that because a P38 also has Range Rover written on it they can just invent a figure and because they say they are worth a silly figure then they must be!! You can have quite a laugh on ebay sometimes. There are some truly superb science fiction writers out there who have missed their calling not working in TV and film. 2011 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 TDV8
