self levelling suspension inactive - can't find an answer

Afternoon all, shame my 1st post is for help.
I've had the self levelling fault for a few weeks. When I first get in the car everything's fine after around half a mile it comes up with the fault and all the lights for the suspension go off. Cycling the ignition cleared the fault and that would be it, I could drive anywhere and it would behave raising and lowering etc for speed.
This was happening a couple of times a week but it got more and more frequent but always within the first mile. The cheapest fix was try a new ring in the compressor, which had little to no effect. As the weeks have gone in it got worse to the point where all the lights were on but nothing happened when asking it to raise, lowering caused the back only to lower, I ended up with the back on the bump stops.
I tried to manually raise it by bridging the wires on the ECU but it failed to raise on its own compressor, I had to use my garage compressor to feed the system and get the car raised. Had the faults read on thursday with a snap on tool and there was nothing showing after deleting the old codes. Came to the conclusion that the compressor was US so I bought a brand new one, fitted it, turned on the ignition and hey presto the thing sprung to life, did all as was asked.

I got in the car yesterday morning for work, a mile up the road and I get the ding and message up on the dash, gone again, cycled the ignition around 5 times before it came back to life, drove to Leeds and it behaved. Got in it after work and it came on again after about 200m and would not clear, drove home anyway but got off the motorway as soon as I could and pulled over, cycled the ignition once and it cleared straight away.

Just been to Morrison's for a few bits, same story half a mike up the road it faults again, carried on to the shop, parked up and cycled the ignition a few times with no sign of life, left it go in the shop for litteraly 10 mins, come back jump in and its working again all the way home.

From what I've read on the suspension I'm leaning towards the valve block on the end of the tank being faulty, I've had a sensor fault before and it just locked me at normal ride height so ruled those out and the compressor is brand new.

Any help/guidance would me much appreciated, someone local with allcomms would be even better

Andy

Are you sure the airbags are not leaking or the hose connectors etc. When the front bags on my 4.2 leaked, you couldn't hear a thing and we only found out how bad it was once we removed the struts and used a blumming big compressor to blow up the bags. The "overfold" covered a large number of longitudinal cracks and no way was that going to work. Your problem could be similar.

OH and sorry, I'm being rude, welcome to the forum. And first post for help, don't think you are the first one Smile Smile Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I'm pretty sure the bags are fine, I work 4 on 4 off shifts, it regularly gets left for the 4 off and doesn't move.

When I manually inflated the bags to get it to the diagnostics I did that Wednesday night and got air in front and rear, it was sitting level inbetween what would normally be mid and high and it stayed like that for around 14 hours.

Plus wouldnt it carry on faulting? If its going to fault it does it within the first mile, if it does and I can get it to clear I can drive to 100mile without fault. Its always within approximately the first mile.

Is your steering wheel in the straight ahead position when driving on a straight road?
It's possible the steering sensor is out of calibration.

Yes steerings fine, probably should have said I've also tried doing the lock to lock procedure to fire the suspension into life but it didn't work. Current

Thumbs Up The only other simple thing I could suggest is looking at you compressor relay. You can remove the plastic cover quite easily and look a the contacts for signs of burning. Given the age of your car might be worth replacing, cheap enough.

Could be a freebie, is it just a no frills switching relay? Got some knocking about in the garage if it is. I'll look where it us and swap it. Current

It's just a standard 50A 4 pin relay.

Welcome to the forum Smile

1. You don't say what the fault is? Knowing this could help pinpoint the problem.
2. Can you get to off road height, manually/physically lift each corner and listen for hissing?
3. Are all your height sensors OK? (how do you know?)
4. Other issues could be a leak in the pipes somewhere (yes, the car will still hold in the bags if the leak is before a valve), a problem with the pressure sensor or reservoir, or a problem with the a control valve, or, though unlikely the ECU itself. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
