replace dial shifter rotary thingy with a proper stick?

Hi all,
just thinking about wether i can get used to the dial in my 2012 FFRR, I wonder if you could retrofit the normal stick of the SC model - complete with the terrain response dial then.

After all, the gear dial in the TDV8 is only a switch - pretty much the same as the stick which is only a swtch as well. They both only trigger electric signals down to the gearbox.

I do have the shifter flappy paddles as well, so can play those if needs be, but I am wondering if I might like to get back a proper stick with proper "gearchange" feel if you know what I mean.

Any ideas about this?

Sell it and buy a 5.0 then you will have a stick!

Blimey.... I'd give my right arm for a switch instead of a stupid great stick, can't understand why they haven't fitted them for years, they put all these time and labour saving devices in cars and you still have to move a big stick just to get it in gear.....!!! Pete

Didn't the NA spec remain with a stick whilst the rest of us got the rotary knob? If I'm right it must be interchangeable, perhaps having to buy the NAS stick if the wiring is different.

The 8 speed rotary is indeed electrical but the stick moves a shaft/cable arrangement so would be classed as a manual shift so, would not work I'm afraid sir... Whistle

The rotary dial has made me even lazier - if you just press the stop switch with it in drive - it puts it into park for you Thumbs Up

Craig, the shift cable only goes down to a switch on the gearbox itself. At least this is what I understood from the ZF people when they serviced my 2003 V8 back then.
I "guess/estimate/assume" (choice) the 6 speed for the SC 5.0 also has a eletrical controlled switchboard inside the gearbox. Those boxes are not manually controlled anymore like they were back in th egood days (Mercedes S Class from the 80s) with a shifter cable and a gear shift arm outside the box. being mechanically adjusted by the cable or mechanical transmission connection.

After all, the gearbox needs a signal for: P, R, N D and S.

Can't see a reason why it should not be possible to retrofit the gearshift lever instead of the rotary thingy.

Apart from hassle, money and "tryanderror gives terror" themes of course.

I believe I can live with the rotary thingy - at least for the time the guarantee runs on the vehicle... Thumbs Up

In principle (assuming you're an electronics and fabrication expert) the Sport's selector should work (in the L405 at least) given that the gearbox is the same and most of everything else is too.

Otherwise suspect your time would be better-spent getting used to the dial.

yep, agreed, timewise this would be a stupid idea and I have plenty of work to do anyway, but just wondered if it would be possible.

Its other things which I need to get used to even more - and they prove to be harder than the shifter dial.
Enterntainment lacks in software for example - and bluetooth phone connection things.
I just had my wifes 2012 Smart with the BT touchscreen Nav and it streames music and even shows the album covers..... you can tell the nav voice to be silent, speak up, adjust herself automatically, etc etc.

all those things you can't do in the FFRR - and I still love it.... Thumbs Up

Can do all of those in my 10my Peugeot Van!!! Rolling Eyes

Heppsen, i don't know who informed you the 6sp was fully electronic in a FFRR as i don't think it is sir! I think you manually select using the cable which runs through an XYZ switch (like a D2) giving you A, the R,N,D display and B, tells the ECU's what the driver is selecting...

Where as the 8sp is fully electronic...

Ill happily be corrected if anyone is in the know? Whistle Thumbs Up Bow down

There's a Bowden cable going to the gearbox on Discoveries and RRs with the 6-speed ZF.

I know that there are versions of the 6HP26 which are totally electronic (i.e. no mechanical linkage between lever and gearbox), but I don't think they ever appeared in Range Rovers given that the Supercharged lever doesn't appear to have changed during L322 production - somebody ask RRPhil.

The same 6sp ZF is totally "drive by wire" in my Aston but I'm sure it was only ever (as mentioned above) driven by a "Bowden" cable when used by JLR Thumbs Up

The full electronic versions of the boxes are fitted with different mechatronics units and use an electric motor to operate the park pawl.
