Blimey.... I'd give my right arm for a switch instead of a stupid great stick, can't understand why they haven't fitted them for years, they put all these time and labour saving devices in cars and you still have to move a big stick just to get it in gear.....!!! Pete

Didn't the NA spec remain with a stick whilst the rest of us got the rotary knob? If I'm right it must be interchangeable, perhaps having to buy the NAS stick if the wiring is different. |

The 8 speed rotary is indeed electrical but the stick moves a shaft/cable arrangement so would be classed as a manual shift so, would not work I'm afraid sir... |

The rotary dial has made me even lazier - if you just press the stop switch with it in drive - it puts it into park for you |

Craig, the shift cable only goes down to a switch on the gearbox itself. At least this is what I understood from the ZF people when they serviced my 2003 V8 back then. I "guess/estimate/assume" (choice) the 6 speed for the SC 5.0 also has a eletrical controlled switchboard inside the gearbox. Those boxes are not manually controlled anymore like they were back in th egood days (Mercedes S Class from the 80s) with a shifter cable and a gear shift arm outside the box. being mechanically adjusted by the cable or mechanical transmission connection. After all, the gearbox needs a signal for: P, R, N D and S. Can't see a reason why it should not be possible to retrofit the gearshift lever instead of the rotary thingy. Apart from hassle, money and "tryanderror gives terror" themes of course. I believe I can live with the rotary thingy - at least for the time the guarantee runs on the vehicle... regards TrueS2 2017 MB V-Class 2016 Q7 (gone) 2012 FFRR TDV8 2012 Smart Pulse Turbo 1986 MB W126 1965 LR Series 2A 1961 LR Series 2 |

In principle (assuming you're an electronics and fabrication expert) the Sport's selector should work (in the L405 at least) given that the gearbox is the same and most of everything else is too.

yep, agreed, timewise this would be a stupid idea and I have plenty of work to do anyway, but just wondered if it would be possible.

There's a Bowden cable going to the gearbox on Discoveries and RRs with the 6-speed ZF.

The same 6sp ZF is totally "drive by wire" in my Aston but I'm sure it was only ever (as mentioned above) driven by a "Bowden" cable when used by JLR |

The full electronic versions of the boxes are fitted with different mechatronics units and use an electric motor to operate the park pawl. |
