Air conditioner compresor/fan making intermittent squeeling

Noticed this yesterday. When I turn the AC on I get an intermittent squealing when the compressor or fan (something under the hood) kicks on to power the AC. It cycles though...not constant...maybe does it for 10 seconds, off for a 5, then on for 10, repeat. I'm assuming the compressor. A/C is cold though. Is this normal? It's annoying to say the least.

Sounds like a worn bearing on the compressor clutch, they will soldier on for ages though, just a bit noisy.... Pete

No idea about drive belt. Iat starts doing it/stops doing it only when the AC is on/off.

Is the bearing an expensive repair? Is it something I should have done? Will it cause more damage if I don't get it fixed?

Will eventually fail but that can take years, if you can find someone to strip and rebuild the compressor then that's the cheapest way, if not it's get a new one time....

If you leave it there is a slight possibility it could damage the belt tensioner, it shouldn't damage anything else though. Pete

have yet to fix this on mine. i think mine is compressor though, as it sounds ok until i switch the ac on, then it squeals. have brought second hand compressor off a bmw x5 when i get round to it i'll get a local aircon man to come and have a look and try vacuum test first if thats ok it may just need regassing and some oil putting in.
pete the number of that pulley bearing is:-DAC3052-3RR9D. koyo is the make. i took the pulley off the front of the compressor now seeing how it works mine is something to do with compressor as it free wheels ok.
sorry if i hijacked thread.
greg Thumbs Up

Greg, keep meaning to look at mine as the bearing grumbles... can you take the front pulley off with it still on the car, does it just unbolt??

And thanks for the numbers I'll see if I can get one... Pete

i havn't tried but have been underneath access is very limited, as i was stuck for time (as usual ) i tried the tensioner first to see if i could release the belt being by the rad i did'nt want to push it and gave up
when second hand compressor arrived i took the nut which from memory is 10mm but don't hold me to it off the front then all you do is pull the pulley off square but beware there are a couple of shims or washers when it comes off these i believe are the gap required for the electromagnetic clutch to engage. Then there is a circlip holding on the pulley to shaft remove circlip the pulley bearing is within this unit so its one 10mm nut circlip pull squarely off and bearing is in that bit. how much room is required i don't know yet but if it ends up as i swap out compressor i will keep you all posted. please don't expect it soon as i have a lot of work to do in garden for swmbo and she must come first. Bow down Bow down Bow down Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
sorry lads had to edit Embarassed must have had one glass toò many see above there is a circlip after the front piece comes off òn the shaft then pulley pulls off. Embarassed
