In my 2006 4.4 AJV8 i started to get the cattle grid vibrations when accelerating under load (i.e. floor from low speed at a roundabout or if starting on a hill) and this started around November last year. I also on 2 or 3 occasions had a Transmission Fault failure where the car locked in 3rd gear but restarting always cleared. When I had the car services at the end of December I had the garage check the transmission fluid and they reported it looked clean and to the correct level so I had then add a couple of sachets of "judder stop" which has improved the situation a bit, i.e. less judder.

Since Christmas I have probably had the "Transmission Fault" 3 or 4 times always when the car has been worked hard or stuck in traffic, i.e. this morning 45 mins in traffic before turning off and heading through the lanes. After stopping to allow oncoming traffic to pass I got the judder on pulling away up the hill the "transmission fault" and stuck in third gear. Cleared when restarted at the next junction but a bit more judder than normal for the rest of the journey. 20 min drive at lunch time all seemed ok.

Only fault on IID is "Incorrect Ratio" which from memory remains even if cleared

I realise that there is a problem somewhere that will not get better but don't really want to just change bits for the sake of it trying to solve if I will end up with these costs plus a new gearbox nor do I really want to just buy a replacement gear box if not needed.

Any ideas on likley faults and how to best repair (bearing in mind car is 10 years old with nearly 120K on the clock so not worth a fortune) as well as any trusted / recommended experts who could possibly inspect and diagnose rather than just replace everything.

is the cattle grid you are experiencing at low revs when accelerating ? is making a noise or just juddering ?

It is a physical vibration normally only under load, ie if I pull away gently it is ok. Car had lots of history to evidence servicing and various repairs with plenty of money being spent but I couldn't find anything gearbox related. However, the garage said the level was good and the oil looked clean and a good colour. I had told them to change if felt necessary at the time but didn't want to do for the sake of and possibly cause more problems.

I would flush now but again would prefer to get it looked at first as no point in spending a few hundred £ to cause more damage or just to have to do it again to get to another part.

Not sure what experts can tell by diagnostics as would like to spend cash wisely. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

I'm wondering how they know what colour the oil is if they didn't drain it out?????

If they topped it up and looked at what flowed out when it was full then that will be mostly what they just put in....

I'd get the oil and filter changed as a first instance, use a genuine filter and THE CORRECT OIL don't let them suggest that what they have in stock will do.... it won't, even oil to the same spec will have different friction modifiers than the correct oil... Pete

Pete, oil amount equal to the volume of shudder stop added was drained off so that the shudder stop would fit in the used to top off to correct level.

Would an oil change make any difference if it is the torque converter ? There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Anyone recommend a gearbox specialist to take a look and change the oil
& filter as would prefer any change to be done by an expert rather than a normal garage as more likely to be able to detect/ diagnose a problems at the same time and save the hassle of dropping off multiple times. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

I've found most so called specialists just say.... needs a new box... mainly because they don't want to guess wrong...

If it's just juddering but the changes are smooth and all other aspects of the box are OK then it would point to the TC... I'd still be tempted to change the oil first, then if it's no better, change the TC, at least that way you are getting as much of the old oil out as you can... But I'd do it myself so the cost would just be the oil... I bought 20lts for about £130 and that's enough to do it about three times....

Moved up north last century from not too far from you so the place I used to use down there has gone now, had a block of flats there last time I passed....

I'd only use a personally recommended garage or take a trip down the M4 to Cam Tech and get Craig to do it, if it was mine....

Whatever you do, don't leave it too long, if the TC is breaking up it will be sending bits all over the place... Pete

^ second what Pete says, I had a judder at low speed and a booming sound at 50mph ish, I changed the filter and used correct grade atf as in the wiki by saintv8 ( great thread too ) and all seems good with the box, even going to say better as the changers are smoother, no judder at all, no booming sound that I can here.
I only just done the service over the weekend but looking good at this point.

Buy only genuine filter for this job, doesn't cost the earth for the parts, not worth skipping on cost here.....you'll pay for it in the long run.

I was going to throw the FF at Craig but as time (all day travel) and cost getting there, I thought this will be the cheapest first fix....if it needed a TC, then Im pretty sure good Craig of the south would be getting a call very soon  If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Its really easy to change the filter and oil. Mine came out very clean and didn't smell of anything metallic or burnt,,,
Phycologically if nothing else my changes are much smoother.
