2002 TD6 - Cracked Cylinder Liner

Hi all,

Just been told but the main dealer that one of my cylinder liner is cracked Big Cry so couple of questions for those in the know...

What's the main cause of this is? the block itself is around 6 years old and covered around 65,000 miles. It's always been service by main dealer when needed.

Can the liners be replaced or is a new block required?

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

If it's a TD6 the engine doesn't have cylinder liners, the cylinder block is cast iron and the cylinders are direct bored into it.

Thanks for the rapid response.

How odd......let me give me of the back story if you don't mind.

The car has been losing a small amount of coolant and it's slowly got worse and worse to the point where I was topping it off every morning - I was getting through around a gallon a month but working fine and not overheating.

dropped it off to the main dealer for a new rad - collected it a day later and almost immediately she over heated - needle all the way into the red and the car cut out. Had to wait until she'd cooled down and drive back home (around 10 miles) the needle popped into the 3/4 area.
Back to the main dealer the next day - they suggested a new water pump and thermostat - that done. They road test and say the problem is still there. They suggest taking the head off to see what's happening (which they have done at no cost to me) but have called me to say it looks like there was a little blow in the gasket AND a crack in one of the liners!!

Based on what you said it sounds like it's a crack in the actual block then?
(for full disclosure all of the updates I've had are from the head of service and he's also said he's not 100% the most technical person)

There could well be a crack in the block, you'd be very unlucky if there was.
Before you go any further I'd be inclined to talk to someone 100% technical. I would get worried about the "lets change this" "lets change that" attitude your dealer seems to display in diagnosing your problem.
It could be just a simple head gasket leak.

Had the same thought so just spoke with the technician.

Crack in the block Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Just need to see if it's something that can be repair if not need to choose the route of new block or bye bye car.

Thanks for your replies 2002 Range Rover Vogue
