diagnosis and repair need direction.

i have a couple of questions regarding fault diagnosis. noob here, i am used to working on older vehicles and harleys,

i have a fault, read with the iid. ATC-Heat / Cool. 0x30 Air quality sensor line fault. no hassle ill fix it.

so i look for any reference to 0x30 in the rave, no reference to 0x30 or "air quality sensor" in the rave. i did expect to find it.

i google the fault, find some results but there seems to be a number of fixes nothing definitive.

some people relate 0x30 to 0x0030, so i found 0030 in the rave p code list, but that seems to be RH bank front HO2S heater circuit, nothing to do with a air quality sensor..

i find a lro admins post says there is a section in the rave "There is A SECTION THAT WILL DESCRIBE THE SENSOR CODES, how to test for them and fix them."

that sound great. i have searched every pdf for key words fault or sensor or code nothing like that in any document,, in the rave download. did i miss it?

what is this P code list? is the the fault code list? and if so why is there no 0x30. what am i doing wrong ? any help to get me started would be awesome.

The air quality sensor is the black box about the size of a large matchbox attached to the top of the radiator cowling, mines been showing that fault since I bought it, I think it controls the automatic recirculation... Didn't seem worth bothering about... Pete

cool. thanks, ill ignore it for now.

why is this code i get from the IIDtool "0x03" not in the rave?

i reckon i should be able to get a code, reference it in the rave and read up on that circuit to see what i can test. is it not like that? what do the RR techs do? (apart from guess and change a random part)

what is this P code list? if this P code list are OBD error codes, why do they not match codes from my IID?

sorry if these are dumb questions. i just want to understand better.

It doesn't work like that, there are a standard list of fault codes across the manufacturers that use the P code, there are also some that are vehicle specific, but the diagnostics have gone further than that, the IID tool will pick up more faults than a basic OBD tool.

The trick is to understand the faults and what may cause them, take the low battery symptoms, this usually puts on lots of different fault codes and if you weren't in the know then you would try to fix the faults themselves.... experience and knowledge from "the collective" would have it sorted with a battery/alternator... It's the same with all fault codes... main dealers are as much in the dark as the rest of us and do change all sorts to rectify the faults.

A fault came up on mine a while ago to do with the throttle body, doing a search revealed that people had spent hundreds on a new throttle body and still not fixed the fault, the fault was an incorrect reading from the throttle pedal that wasn't picked up by the system until it got to the throttle body.... The fix was a new throttle pedal not the body...!!!

If you have fault codes, then google them and read all you can, sometimes it's a quick easy fix, or the sensor itself.

The systems on ours are not foolproof either, there are a few "standard" codes which most of us have that don't actually mean a fault....

All very confusing but I hope you get the idea.... Pete
