4.4 derived from the 3.6?

Just been having a browse around the net, and found that the 4.4 tdv8 engine, is fundamentally derived from the 3.6. Aparently the engine architecture is the same as the 3.6, itself derived from the 2.7 in the sport and the disco.

the only difference in between the 3.6 and 4.4 is that the stroke was increased, the bore is the same and to increase the capacity all they did was increase the stroke.......

not sure about the bolt on bits though Rolling Eyes There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes the 4.4 was derived from the 3.6. I know the 3.0 is a similar approach with respect to the 2.7. I think the 2.7 and 3.6 shared the same design for the block with the latter getting an additional two cylinders obviously.

As to ancillaries didn't they switch to parallel sequential turbos at roughly the same time? The difference between TDV8 and SDV8, I know there were some 4.4's branded as TDV8 (same for TDV6 and SDV6) but I seem to remember from a conversation I had with one of their engineers that the main reason they changed over to the SD prefix was primarily marketing - to make it more obvious the turbo setup had changed. Although there might have been some overlap - but perhaps if you had a FF branded as TDV8 it meant you had the 3.6 and if you had an SDV8 you had a 4.4? Ed

Yes you are quite correct they are... And yes they run a parallel sequential turbo setup apposed to the conventional twin setup on the 3.6... Less lag (everyones complaint when the 3.6 was released! Thumbs Up

There was no SDV8 L322, all are TDV8, may they be 3.6L or 4.4L

The SDV8 branding came with the L405 for marketing purposes since the Sport did come with TDV6 for the base model and SDV6 for it uprated version, first introduced with the Disco 4 and 3.0L Sports.

The LR marketing lads now had to put a S on the Turbo diesel V8 L405 as "S" now meant "top of the line engines". Of course there are no "base" V8 diesel so no more TDV8.

^ Yes I(we) know that but if the Turbo set up changed on the 4.4 L322 should they not have been branded SDV8 to show the difference ?

Turbos set up changed from 3.6L to 4.4L, but not since, 3.6L had a single set up, 4.4L one only also.

The 4.4L is loosely based on the 3.6L really to the point they advertised it as a new engine.

Also 2.7 and 3.6L differ considerably, starting with the V angle being completly different.

it is all relative, but to be blunt, the 3.6L is FAR from a 2.7L with 2 extra cylinders if you see what I mean. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

LR says that the 3.6 and 2.7 are the same.
Me thinks that the only thing which was similar was the Bore x Stroke
The 3.6 is 90º V8 whereas the 2.7 (and 3.0) is a 60º V6.

For me, that renders both engines a world apart.

Regarding the 3.6 vs 4.4, it's an evolution where the 3.6 has parallel variable geometry turbos, 1 for each bank, and the 4.4 has got sequencial turbos. One for low revs and one for high revs.
