I quite like the idea of nice chunky off road tyres on my 20" rims for (as i mentioned in the subject) occasional off road use - mostly fields at car shows where the FFRR will be used as a pack horse/response vehicle and possibly a tow car if it gets muddy - and there is the question - anyone any advice on what to go for? I have read various posts and the General Grabber tyres get mentioned a lot but like anyone I am on a budget and want something that will last (although I don't do huge miles) and is reasonably priced - although if the consensus is that the grabbers are the ones to get I can stretch the budget a bit.

What is your tolerance for road noise the rest of the time ?

Pirelli Scoprions seem to get the best all round reviews - I've not tried them yet but have a set in my shed ready to fit.

Grabbers are a bit more off road focussed and a bit noisier, particularly on motorways - which may not be a big issue for you....

Noise is not an issue (I'll just crank the stereo up) and I don't do a lot of motorway miles - I would only be off road from about now until September at various shows and events and it is mostly grass with the odd beach here and there (both shingle and sand)

The General Grabber is a very hard wearing tyre so It represents pretty good value in the life of the tyre , but
The Cooper Zeon LTZ is slightly more aggressive and better looking and guaranteed for 70,000 km here , slower speed rating for chunky good looks .

Look good - on that though, what size can the FFRR use ? currently on mine are 255 - 50 R20 tyres I am finding it hard to match that size although I know it does not have to be an exact match I don't want my tyre guy to order stuff that wont fit

Apparently you can go to 255 55 R20 without problem.

I run 275/45/20 officially a couple of percent smaller than 255/50/20 standard fit but with the chunky tread no appreciable difference and much more available here in WA . 2008 MY Supercharged

for occasional field use, i would go with the scorpions, they invariably get good reviews, on here.

I am running a set on my d4 at the moment and have had no problems so far. We run a set of Grabbers on one of the Hilux and i can say that they are wearing well, and that is with some constant motorway use for well over 3 years now, probably approaching 40,000 miles. Personally i don't think that they are much more aggressive than the Scorpions. The tread cuts aren't that much wider than the scorps so can't see that there would be much difference off road.

At the end of the day there isn't that much which will grip on a wet field....... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
