Ziggys weekend from hell

Well me and the cook a mate and his wife went camping this weekend
I can honestly say I’v never been more worried for the cooks safty as I was last night
Got to the campsite early Friday evening set up the camper trailers had a nice meal few drinks
Then turned in about 2300.

At about 0030 the was a lot of noise from the fire trail above the campsite, cars reving up banging and clanking of cars banging over the rocks
About 0130 about 8 4wheel drives towing big duel axle trailers with ATV’s and dirt bikes pulled into the campsite surrounded the camp fire parking within spitting distance of our camper trailers and blocking my mate in severely , he had to drive over a small bush when we made our escape .
About 15-20 males of middle eastern appearance averaging from late teens to early 30’s got out formed a circle and started chanting, singing and shouting Allah Akbar, well let me tell you I was having visions of being the next headless infidel. This went on for about ½ hour, then they broke that up and started shouting for the Sambuca and rum.
So they started drinking riding the dirt bikes and ATV’s around the campsite and our camper trailers
This went on till about 0500 when one of them started wailing and they all formed a circle again chanting and shouting about this Akbar bloke, this went on for another ½ hour and then they turned in so after a very nervous night we packed up and left we were out of there before 0600.
So went into the local cop shop and reported all this there response was were very sorry but there’s nothing we can do we only have 4 officers on the weekend for the Sholehaven region (That’s about as big as Wales mainly bush and coast line) but thanks for the rego numbers we’ll check them out make sure there taxed mot’d and insured.
We had no phone reception, only two blokes if they had turned nasty we would have been up the creek without the proverbial paddle.
Now the last couple of years the press reports of groups of youths of middle eastern appearance threating and intimidating people on the beaches in Sydney have been (mainly young western women) growing. Now I can say from first hand experience its not just happening on the beaches but there expanding into the bush as well. Intimidating lone or small groups of westerners
Can we ever stop this now???????????
One thing I can say for sure Zigg aint going camping for awhile
I only wish we had the same gun laws as the US
…….because the cook and my mates wife would have had no chance if they had turned nasty…………
And at the time that sure seemed a possibility

Sorry to hear mate that that sort of crap has also landed in Oz. It reminds me of the news around the Cronulla riots. Must have been pretty scary. Problem with having guns, if the gun laws were like the US, it was more likely this lot would have had them as well and then you would not be reporting.

Having some experience with IPSC type shooting, I'd say a trained IPSC shooter would stand a decent chance against a lot that big but otherwise you'd be on "even ground" skill wise and seriously outgunned. Besides, if you would have started shooting first, you'd be in jail for life probably as no way would you be able to prove self defence.

And threatning with a gun, virtually never works with these types especially once they start drinking.

Best thing is to get out and get moving asap.

Ridiculous that the police didn't do a f-ing thing. Can't they call in help from the military or anti-terrorist units ?? Probably not.

Have you got dashcams ?? Maybe use them in the future on continuous loop so you can show it to police and prosecuters.

Makes my blood boil, same as those dicks in the Paris metro. Stick all those idiots on a single atol and do one more last atomic bomb test................. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Thanks the good wishes guys,
this has opened my eyes to the whole Multicultural issue both the cook and I
were pretty much ambivalent on the whole issue before this, but now well lets just say were both against it.

ebajema

Cobber both the cook and I shoot minimum of twice a month mostly were down the range 2-3 times a week for a couple of hours.
Both long guns and handguns, believe me when I say the worry level for the cook would have been a lot less if I had been armed.

We have a friend in the NSW police and after talking to him today they reckon its only a matter of time before
we have our own incident of a total innocent being sliced and diced on the street in the name of Allah

I truly wonder what the world is coming to.

Must start looking for an Armored FF

Hey Ziggy, good to know that you do have experience with guns in that case I won't need to worry too much Smile. A good limited class IPSC gun would have served you well if things turned ugly but chances were that you would probably have ended up in jail because "those guys never really did anything or at least you can never prove it".

But I'm afraid that your police buddy is wrong, the Sydney siege was the first of the incidents that is currently plagueing the world where complete nutcases calling themselves muslims terrorize the "normal" people.

I live and have lived in Muslim countries and have to say I feel perfectly safe here while I would be more concerned in some of the major capitals of Europe of being on the receiving end of such madmen/women.

I see a similarity with the "red" terrorists of the 60's, 70's and 80's where another distorted "belief" resulted in innocent people getting killed through guns or bombs. These so-called muslims are just as deranged as the communist terrorists that wreaked havoc in Europe.

Anyway, very glad that you, the cook and friends are OK physically. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I'm glad you and Cook are safe. Not a nice experience. I just hope the police DO check the registrations out AND take action should something not be in order....

Very cool gadget Thumbs Up but the price would have me just using a sat phone.

You could try the SPOT (findmespot.com). Communications are limited, but when all you want to say is, "HELP!" It provides a reasonable choice for the cost.

At over 800 bucks its more than a sat phone, but we'v been looking at getting a sat phone now for awhile

The cooks not very happy.........dash cam............sat phone............I'm spending to much money LOL

we still cant get our heads around what happened, and we'v been discussing weather or not this is gonna change the way we go camping we have always avoided caravan parks and dedicated "camp sites" but now maybe there not such a bad idea.

Would you let this influence your camping or consider it a one off unlucky event??

Have you considered taking a personal EPIRB ?? When you set it of, you will get SARS helicopters hovering overhead in no time.

There is another Aussie system on the market that is sat phone based and originally used for people working solo in the outback. It allows for text message type alert messages plus GPS coordinates to be sent to pre-programmed numbers. Sad to see it is necessary and most probably you will not need them once you have them.

Now I of course don't condone nor would suggest any illegal activities but what if you forgot that you had the guns in the back coming back from the range..................... Oops that would be illegal of course but hey we are all getting old Smile. But lets not do that, there are alternatives as I believe bows and arrows for target practice are legal in Oz ?????
