4.2 S/C smoke from engine bay

Hello, looking for some help and hopefully someone who has had this problem and knows what it is.

On friday I arrived home having driven for about 1/2 an hour, all seemed fine. About 1.5 hours later I go out to move the car so the wife can park, moved forward and backed back onto the drive, took about 2 minutes. Switched off and walked round to the passenger side to find a fair quantity of black-ish smoke coming from under the front passenger side wheel arch. Opened the bonnet and more smoke coming from up in front of the engine on the passengers side. Smoke smelt like electrical burning rather than oil etc. I have checked a load of wires in the engine bay today and all seems fine and have left the car idling for about 15 mins and no more smoke.

Anyone experienced anything similar and have any tips on what it could be? Its one of those issues I don't feel comfortable leaving. The search function didnt reveal anything similar.

2006 4.2 supercharged by the way.

Many thanks all.

Similar thing happened to me years ago, picked up a stray plastic bag that got wrapped around the exhaust, smoked like a pig for a while.... gets you really worried.... then it melted away and all was fine...

I hope yours is so easy as well.... Pete

So a bit of an update on this one, after a little investigating I think it is the a/c compressor clutch which has gone, it won't engage what ever I do. So guess it has failed inside and the smoke came from it shorting. Does anyone have experience of changing one of these? And does anyone know what voltage the control lead should be providing to the a/c clutch? Mine seems to be 9v?
