2007 TDV8 Complete loss of Brakes due to Brake hose failure

Hi All
2 years ago I lost all brakes while driving my 2007 TDV8, luckily i was going slow at the time. It turned out the left hand front brake hose had split. Quite an unnerving experience. Replaced the hose and repaired.

Last year same thing happened again this time rhs, I heard a slight pop and pedal to floor, luckily I had already stopped.

The electric emergency brake seems to be very inconsistent and id question its ability when needed at speed.

Ive never had a brake line fail previously, and when asking around it seems to be a very rare occurrence. Could only find one other L322 Range Rover owner with the same experience on Google.

The first experience I put down to an anomaly but now I'm not so confident, and they have both failed in the same location. Pics attached.

Ive heard of a recall in US, may pay to check and or replace.

Maybe i didnt push down far enough on the brake pedal but I certainly did not have the secondary system kick in.

This sounds most certainly like the recall on brake lines indeed and I'm pretty sure it is not limited to the US/NAS models. That is very bad since brake circuits should be split front back or diagonally to prevent total loss of brake pressure.

Did you try by pumping the brakes a few times after it failed to regain pressure in the remaining circuit ???

BAD BAD BAD and this does give our member Drivesafe another arrow on his bow (see his post on FFRRs being a bit dangerous). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

That must have been a brown trousers moment sir Shocked Shocked Shocked

Eugene is correct that the brakes should be linked to stop the pedal hitting the floor! i.e. when one hose goes, the other two corners will still work as normal bringing you to a safe stop...

One quick point to be made here... I keep telling members to change wear items in pairs (callipers, struts, tyres, pads even balljoints) because if one side has failed, the other won't (usually) be far behind!

If anyone has any inkling there is an issue with a brake line, get them changed as a pair... PLEASE Thumbs Up

Brown trouser and then some, the first time i drove for 4 ks home, im not real impressed with the emergency brake either, try it just for fun. I'm certain I had no brakes and im aware of the secondary system as rebuilt plenty old school master cylinders back in the day, also didn't want to bleed it dry. Maybe I should disconnect a front brake hose and test again to be sure about the secondary operation. Maybe I have a secondary failure as well.

I have to agree with Craig again on this, always change in pairs (where applicable) is one of the old golden and IMHO still valid rules.

I am even considering to change my brake hoses to stainless braided hoses with additional coating like on my motorbikes. Standard brake hoses are fine but I like to be a bit stronger if possible especially on the FFRR with going off road. Of course the brake lines do need to be fully approved to whatever applicable standards and be suitable for harsh conditions, not sure if the ones I found were that good.

Coming back to the original problem, has the dealer been able to explain why the heck the car didn't stop on the remaining brakes ??? Better get JLR involved with this as well as it could mean a major issue for them if people start getting injured or even die because of this !!!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
