BONG! Now bleedin' what?

It's wet itself again. Banging Head Banging Head

Came out this morning and got "Charge System Fault". Thought sod it, I've got to take the lad to school so used it anyway. It's only 6 miles so should cover that easily on a 110ah battery. Nope, "Restricted Performace after 3 miles, then all the leccy windows went down and the radio went off. Headlamps still bright as a button, weird.

Called LR Assist and it's a big yellow taxi job. ah Censored , just what I needed. So parked up at home (it did drive OK) switched off, got out and locked it. The electric cooling fan comes on full chat. Huh? WTF! Unlock the car and it stops. Lock it and it starts. FUBARed.

To make matters worse they've delivered a Freelander. What a nail. Noisy, thrashy, very Massey Ferguson, and this is the HSE. I really do wish I could get this LR disease out of my blood 'cos I'd do the sensible thing and buy a German car. Censored

Honestly, that hateful Skoda I use for work, with 175k on it, it's way more reliable. Bought for 2 grand with 120k on it and it's never missed a beat. No love for it but massive respect. And it puts a 30k flagship model Range rover to absolute shame. LR approved used means jack schitt by the look of things and I'm heartily sick of it. I didn't envisage buying the FFRR to drive a string of courtesy cars.

and breathe............Perhaps tomorrow will bring good news, like it's caught bloody fire and I can claim the insurance. Truly, when it's great there's nothing like it, but it only ever seems to behave on the 29th of February.

Rant over then. Anyone need this soapbox? Whistle

Not really Stan, it defies logic. Major electrical gremlin by the look of things and I'll bet it's some dodgy connection or a tuppeny fuse that's causing it all. It's had that many new parts under warranty it's getting like Trigger's broom.

Latest update from the dealer. Unable to reproduce the faults despite there being 31 recorded codes in the ECU. Sad

Apparently it's behaving itself again. Yeah right !

See the thing is I can't trust the damn thing any more. One minute it's fine then the next it's havoc with everything going wrong. Since this is the family holiday car, tows the caravan, takes us deep into France etc what kind of holidays would they be if I'm constantly worrying what it's going to do next?

Maybe it's just me, but any time I've been involved with an intermittent problem, the first thing a garage does is reset the errors and wait for anything new to pop up while they're testing it.

if this is the case, it goes against all the principles of fault finding that I was taught early in my career, but hey that was centuries ago when you could unsolder a transistor to fix a fault! Whistle Rolling Eyes Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Well I think the same way as you. When I did my degree (Electronic Engineering) we still had valves in some places, solid state was not the standard back then. But these days the "Trained Technicians" seem to rely far too much on the diagnostic computer. If the computer says XYZ then it has to be true.

If it were me I would start by cleaning up and refitting every earth strap on the car, perhaps fit a new battery knowing these things with low voltage issues, definitely replace the battery charge control module and then work my way through all the multi-way connectors with a can of contact cleaner. 3 or 4 hours work for sure but I suspect it would probably fix the vast majority of it. Intermittent electrical systems faults are usually a bad contact somewhere. But then, what do dinosaurs like us know? Sad

+1 on the feeling pain. I can relate to the 'family car whatever next concerns'. Had similar issues with a TDV6 couple of years ago. Fitted new battery and all was well ever after. I brought an original equip LR battery at about £120.00 and lost a couple of knuckles fitting it but did the trick.

Look forward to hearing of the solution. Thumbs Up 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
