FFRR/ RRS or D4

Hi all,

Currently shopping for a new car at the minute although not sure how exactly we managed to start looking all together.

Currently have a TD5 D2 and previously had 2x 2008 D3 TDV6. Now originally we had 4 medium to large/ v large dogs hence we went for the D3. Unfortunately we have since lost 2 dogs and the mrs was doing 25k per year commute so the D3 went. I got a TD5 for the dogs and the caravan and she got a new Clio.

Then she got a new job and now uses the train so her commute in the car is now 4 miles a day if that.

Originally we went looking at an Evoque or a Disco Sport for her and as an emergency tow car should the D2 fail.

Next thing I know she's in and out of new D4s and RRS.

We started to then look at the FFRR and the 4.4 TDV8 and we (well I was loving them) been looking on LR used site with a budget of 30-35k so a fair few cars to choose from.

I'm looking at the 2011 TDV8 with the 8 speed box which is in our price range obviously there are plenty of RRS and D4 in that price range too they only seem to be 6 months younger so not a massive age/milage gap for the prices.

Can I have some feedback from people who have come from a D4 SDV6 6 or 8 speed to a FFRR and from a similar RRS to a FFRR.

As it's only the 2 of us, 2 dogs and 1800kg caravan I'm really swinging to the FFRR and the RRS. Before we could justify a D3/4 for the dogs but not anymore really. We are lined up this weekend to test drive all 3 so I suppose time will tell.

Also any spec that is desirable on these. Seen a few VSE with climate front seats, adaptive cruise and vision pack anything else to look for?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian

I changed from a new RRS to the FFRR and would i go back.
No. The FFRR is a great car and has a load more road presence. The sport is better for road handling but its slower than the 4.4TDV8.
I tow 3 ton with the FF and you wouldn't know theres anything on the back of it.
You should go for the VSE as you get a few more toys.

Mine is available if you want to spend a few more quid. Whistle

I've had both and its the vogue for me any day of the week. I will say that the 3.0 V6 in my sport was fantastic and when I get a 405 (soon I hope) I will go V6 me thinks!

One thing to think about is Diesel Particle filter problems ,4 miles a day is not a good idea for any diesel. would the car be doing a regular long hard run on a motorway ?
You might find that petrol is a more sensible answer and then your choices will have to change . 2008 MY Supercharged

Hi Axle,

Totally agree with what you're saying ref the DPF. It will get good runs.

The Mrs Clio was new and has done 10k in 12 months with no issues on the DPF due to good runs to Poole/Glasgow and weekends away.

I have a Disco 3 and a FFRR 4.4 TDV8, the FFRR is no where near as good at carrying loads lthe D3 with all the seats down is like a van, you don't get as many cup holders and storage in the centre console with the fridge is good on D3 but the FFRR has very limited storage here, but as far as that warm feeling that you get when you love a car the FFRR wins hands down. The only thing on the FFRR I find a pain is the active cruise (ACC) it works but I wish you could override it and just have normal cruise when you want as it can get a bit jittery when cars or wagons drift out slightly and it spots them at the last minute (I always have it on the Audi setting e.g as close as possible) and slams on the brakes, the other thing I wish it would return to cruise speed a bit slower as when you are doing 90 and you get slowed down to 60 for a minute as soon as that car moves it floors it back up to 90 in about 3 seconds dropping into about 3rd gear, just a steady increase would be nicer. They are a lovely place to be in and I am not knocking the Disco as this is a great 4x4 and possibly the best all rounder on the market but it will never match a FFRR for luxury. We too have 3 dogs and the 2 Rotties love the FFRR better than anything Very Happy

Funny you mention the car accelerates as quickly as possible. We had a 7 series a few years back that done the exact same when it was resuming speed and BMW have the same gearboxes as LR.

The cup holders for me on the D4 is a big issue as they are in my mind in the wrong place as they are between my hand and the gear knob (if that makes sense). The D3 had them in the perfect position and the FFRR again great position as they are beside the gear knob and away from any controls.

I'm pretty much set on a FFRR but will let the mrs test all 3 just so she doesn't feel I bulldozed my way through and made the decision. May as well drive it last or after the D4 as she will have the direct comparison.

Thumbs Up

Right we've managed to find a rather tidy 2011 VSE with Autobiography exterior trim, vision assist pack and some other options.

Gold/bronze colour with arabica seats.I think it has cherry or burr wood.

How easy is it to replace the wood trims? Ideally we would much prefer grand black.

Anything we should be looking for? Any other options worth extra?

The trim is easy to replace but I think genuine LR parts won't be cheap, I do like the colour you have choose I think it is different and quite "Regal" on a FFRR but I had no choice they only made the model I wanted in black Laughing The only options I really like are the leather headlining (easy to clean with 3 dogs) and leather dash (just makes the cabin have an air of poshness) but don't know if these are available on a VSE, rear entertainment is good if you have kids and the reclining seats with wing back headrests in the rear are nice but other than that it's just enjoy. All the best, Will.
