don't think you need to panic too much as the oil specs for the 4.2 and TDV8 are exactly the same, WSS-M2C913-B Ford spec. Not sure about the low soot aspect, but they should be using an oil which complies with this. worth an ask which oil they actually put in though I'm pretty sure they must have gone far off piste if they have put the wrong stuff in.

I rang the servicing MD parts dept this morning, asked what type of engine oil they use on the 4.2SC, the person didn't know off the top of his head, asked someone, said he thought it was 5/30 and when I asked about low soot oil being only for diesels, he said it can be used in both. |

As long as it's the correct grade, and meets required specs, you can use normal oil or low ash oil |

Cheers Mikey, is there one 'better' than the other do you know (never heard of it used on petrol before and I know you can buy both types, hence the question)? |

Generally, the low ash oil is fully synthetic, and a better quality of oil

Just had my vehicle serviced etc and I notice that the oil spec was WSS-M2C934-B. |

That is the updated spec. Is that on the 3.6? What does it say in the handbook. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'd be worried if any oil was causing soot deposits on the exhaust, let along a low soot oil! |

One question. Why should it be related to the oil used? I would have thought that unburned fuel is more likely to cause soot deposits? John

I've spent the best part of 3 hours with a very good professional mechanic giving the SC the once over this afternoon in his immaculate workshop and he too said 5W/30 low soot oil is fully synthetic, petrol engine compatible; and his knowledge was much more convincing than the LR Parts Dept person I spoke with this morning.

It is indeed the updated spec, and the vehicle is a 3.6 TDV8. The handbook says " use a 5w/30,5w/40,10w/30 or 10w/40 oil meeting Land Rover WSS-M2C913-B only. In high sulphur markets use WSS-M2C921-A. |
