4.2SC - New Oil Filter Housing Assembly needed.

After yet more months of investigation, as of 20.03.15, an oil leak has now been deemed attributable to the need for a new oil filter housing assembly. This original post has been edited and the 20 March update further in the thread explains the diagnosis/ need for a new assembly. The rest of the post until that point shows efforts to fix the leak along the way.

Does the engine oil need to be drained so as to be able to replace the oil filter and the gasket seal?

I've just paid a MD to oil service the car which beforehand had an oil leak from an oil filter housing gasket seal which is still leaking because they didn't have a replacement seal.

Just found out the gasket seal arrived yday.

For just changing the oil filter to replace a seal, would I need to disconnect the battery ground (earth) cable?

not necessary to do that ryan, but remember to put some new oil on the seal before screwing the filter back on.. ... - .- -.

The oil filter can be quite tricky to get access to. I picked up one of these when I changed the oil on mine, great tool had the filter out in seconds. From what I have read the sc has more hoses etc restricting the filter than on mine. But this tool will do the job on a long extension Thumbs Up

The shape of the gasket/ O ring is a tad confusing Stan.

Look at the figure 8 gasket I've photographed, part number LVF500010.

And yet Microcat shows a singular O ring (6840) for the same part number?

so is the oil leaking from the bottom of the oil filter?
if so then it should only be the one round seal that maybe is twisted or not seated correctly .. ... - .- -.
