The steering wheel switch is non latching, and if the red light is coming on then the switch is doing its job. But if the light is going out almost instantly, I would surspect the 'ECU' Laughing it's a timer circuit, the names that they give to these items is a joke, anyway the timer on mine stays on for about 30 minutes and then turns its self off. If yours' is going out after a few seconds, I would suspect that it's lost it's count on the chip and is just going to the off straight away.
If your going to pull the steering wheel apart it would be an idea to put a multi meter on the steering wheel connections just to make sure that there is still a cuircut. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

What your saying is it's a re-named glow plug timer that L/R have marked up to the power of 10 Shocked
At first I thought that it might be controled by the tempriture of the steering wheel, but as outside tempritures has no effect on the the time it stays on, I'm now thinking that it's a simple timer with a fancy name Very Happy

On that logic my 1994 Jeep has ECU controled wipers Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Wasn't ignoring bud, just questioning the implied computer control bit, a timer chip is more like a stupid computer sitting in the corner with it's shoes and shocks off, to enable it to count to 20! ECU's to me contain a processor and require mutiple inputs to function, where as we are talking about something that's more like a flasher unit or a wiper delay relay. Relay to me is £5 to £30, ECU is £200 plus, although if JLR are invloved £200 + for a simple relay is not beyond imagination Laughing
Have you seen the RRP on the dash ends, going back to your cup holder mod, if they can price a piece of plastic at over £1100 Shocked How much for a simple timer ? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Sounds like the element has developed a fault. I had the exact same problem. Press the button, red light comes on then goes off. Is a circuit that's constantly monitored by a thermistor used to regulate the temperature, same as the heated seats. The eminent could be fine and the thermistor could be at fault. Regardless no items are serviceable. The wheel change is an easy job although the air bag is fiddly to remove (especially if someone's been at it before)

A new wheel, or working 2nd hand one will solve your problem. You can't have a RR without a working heated wheel, it's the law!

Craig Shocked Shocked That'll be the wiper delay then Wink Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter , athough it might be the fancy illuminated columb stalks that they are refering to, not even L/R fit them Wink
It all started as advertising hype in the states in the 50's / 60's, they thought that calling things o-matic or o-tronic, it made them more up to date and desireable. My '66 Thunderbird was fitted with a Cruise-o-matic gearbox Bow down , until you find out that it's only a 2 speed Shocked . Fortuneatly mine is an export model which ended up with the boring standard C6 automatic transmission, which has more gears and takes more power Smile
My wheel fittng guides are a pee take hommarge to this, that's why I called them the Guide-o-Matic, Censored Censored didn't work, maybe should called them a Wheel GCU Laughing

SteveyD were you able to check the old wheel, or did you just take a chance that it was the element / thermistor? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Well my steering wheel ECU must be well broken because mine stays on for as long as the button is pressed, had it on for three hours the other day.... I do like warm fingers....

Mind you I do moan that the stitched seam doesn't get quite as hot as the rest of the wheel.... never bl00dy satisfied as SWMBO keeps reminding me.... Pete

Mine doesn't get that hot, would say it's warm, and nowhere near the level of the seats. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
