4.4 V8 Tapping/knocking sound on idle after oil change | |
Hi guys I did an oil change on my 2004 4.4 range rover yesterday and the car has now developed a noticeable ticking/ knocking sound when idling once the engine has warmed up. When the engine is cold and is started it sounds fine with no noise at all but as soon as it's warmed up after say 5 mins the ticking/knocking is there.
As far as I'm aware the car had 5w30 fully synthetic engine oil in it before on it's last service and I replaced it with a 5w40 fully synthetic that meets all required oil specs for the car (the oil is by Triple QX).
I can't be 100% sure the sound wasn't there before the oil change but I'm pretty sure it wasn't as I recall the engine was quiet when warmed up and idling. I wanted to ask what the learned experts on this forum think I should do next - should I be looking to change the oil again back to a 5w30 or is the ticking/knocking noise when engine is warm and idling not serious?
The engine is on 144k miles, I don't know if that bears any relevance - which oil grade is better suited to older engines? The engine drives fine and idles smoothly and I have not noticed any difference in performance or economy since the oil change.
