Costa Concordia being parbuckled Monday - maybe.

I will be watching with interest. Let's hope whoever is in charge is more competent than its dipstick captain.

@ Kurt, thanks for this. Would be very interesting to see, look forward to the Discovery or Nat Geo documentary !!\

This will be daytime job, you don't want to risk this in the dark.

@ Googsy, I thought he said "saluting an old friend/captain" they don't look that old ?? Must have had some "work" done I guess Smile

Still a very sad story, like most big ship wrecks (Exxon Valdez, Amoco Cadiz, Herald of Free Enterprise, Titanic etc.) no matter who was at fault or who did what wrong and who could have prevented it and how many people came out alive. There are people dead (not so much on the Valdez and Cadiz but still), environmental damage and humongous cost. Very very sad.

Having been involved with vessels for a great many years (design of offshore construction vessels mainly) as well as operating them, gives one a different perspective on these accidents. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Delayed 2 hours by the weather, but seems to be lifting judging by the dirty superstructure now on show.

The Costa ships were always getting into scrapes and the concordia in particular was always worth watching when berthing. (for the laugh)
I was in Palermo for 2 years and saw many scrapes. This one was when the Concordia smashed into the floating dry dock on a windy day.
I've got a video of it somewhere, quite frightening at the time when it came looming towards us

So as they winch the ship upright, there must be a tipping point where it will just fall. is that ok, or are there other cables to lower it gently?

according to the news there's a metal framework under the ship to stop it rolling over

According to the stories/drawings, there is a big frame sitting on the seabed, combined with concrete "mats" for the vessel to land on. I expect the sponsoons may also play a role adding buoyancy and they will be used for ballasting it down gently. I watched the BBC live lead throughout the day (inbetween doing work of course) and had some thoughts about how they engineered it, buoyancy, structural analysis etc. etc. pretty much similar to some of the work we do in my part of the offshore industry Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I understand it won't continue rolling over once it's upright, but there's a tipping point before that when the pulling cables will go slack and it settles upright. In an interview the head guy said they have one chance to do it as the structure is weakened so much by parbuckling that it would break if they try it twice, and this is why they're going so slowly. I just assume that they'll lower it from other cables, but I can't see any.

That's what I meant with the buoyancy tanks or sponsoons, if they're empty they will start taking up buoyancy the further the cables pulled them over. By using clever engineering and software, they would probably have calculated the buoyancy being a bit more than the weight so the cables will stay tight. Once the vessel is past the tipping point, they will then slowly pump water into the buoyancy tanks allowing the vessel to slowly be ballasted onto the supports. Similar to what a normal ballast system would do but now externally. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Looking at the time lapse footage it does seem it moved much more rapidly at the end.
