Centre Console pop-up cup holder - how to break?

Folks,

This stupid cup holder to the right of the passenger seat that pops up won't go down. It has been like it since I bought it although was working until the previous owner demonstrated it to me and ever since then it wouldn't shut.

I've had a look inside and can't see anything trapped that would prevent it from shutting. I am reluctant to remove half of the centre console just to get the thing out and take a look unless it really is a 10 minute job which I don't believe.

Is there any way to break it completely so it doesn't pop-up and just shuts?

I've taken an initial look but can't see anything obvious in terms of springs to cut etc?

Thoughts?

Mine broke shortly after I bought it, I did a fix similar to the thread above but they obviously weren't meant for offroading as every time I went over a decent bump it would fly out...

Took it apart again and removed the spring inside and now you just pull it to open and it shuts as before, works great and never opened unintentionally since....

So if yours is more broken than welshdragon's then try taking the spring out.... Pete

Thanks for all of the info.

Interestingly, I removed the ash tray cup holder thing as I hate it and don't smoke so now just have a cup holder recess (black cup with lid and chrome cigarette stubber) to go up on eBay shortly btw if anyone is interested, never used)

Anyhow, I saw I can access part of this mechanism now that other cup holder panel was removed.

I found this part;

One side

Other side

I believe this could be part of the whole assembly and possibly what is stopping it from shutting but does anyone know how this goes back in?

It does look like it yes. I am wondering how this fixes in place, presumably I need to take this whole thing out or, by taking the centre cup hold out whether I can attach that way.

Yes it is the bit, doesn't do much if you take the spring off, this bit is the locking mechanism to keep the cup holder down/closed.

Sadly you have to take this to bits like I had done to repair, be careful as the plastic is brittle Thumbs Up If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Ok sounds like another possible solution.

I never use this flaming cup holder so I have my solvent weld at the ready since I can access the inside and bits I need from the centre cup holder when removed Smile
