The 1st article refers to "Engineers were worried about what effect resting at such a severe angle for so long would have on the inner workings of the cars, especially on the electrolyte in the batteries" while the second alludes vaguely to possible negative effects on JLRs carefully cultivated brand image (by selling vehicles that may have hidden damage).

As far as the first goes: I have a very hard time imagining what serious damage any vehicle components could sustain due to be at 45° for 2 weeks. The battery? Maybe. So chuck it. Electrolyte leaking from the battery and damaging other components? That is relatively easy to see and assess. What else?

As for the image thing: have all the vehicles VINs noted and publicly available as damaged vehicles sold w/o warranty etc. - then hold an auction with 30% of the proceeds going to charity with the rest going back to the insurer to minimize damages. And JLR chooses the charity as well as making the "green-ness" of a re-sale rather than scrapping known and exploits both for maximum PR effect.

In the end, tho, I am quite sure Craig is correct.

But If the insurer has to cover everything, we all end up paying for this in the long run. Yes, in the grand scheme of things 30million is peanuts... but I'd like one of the L405s, a Jag F, and I'll take that Boxter as well....

There is a whole marketing challenge here.
As we all know the first scratch on your new car is the most painful......

Here we go....

"Prevent yourself from your worst nightmare... The first damage on your new car.

Now on reservation only our predamaged series . This completely new option on Tata cars is now for free and only available through your main dealer in a limited series....be quick this wont last long!....

Some of the photos showed cars with only damaged doors. New body panels are one thing, but removing a door and replacing it with a brand new in one shouldn't be a problem.

However, I also expect they're headed for the recyclers.

JLR will just scrap them... the same as they do with mules, test vehicles etc etc... They can't take the risk of ruining their reputation! If a customer ordered a new car, thats what he paid for Whistle Not one sat on a container ship with a JCB sat on its roof for a fortnight! Laughing
