IT Networking - query with home network speeds

I have a crappy SKY broadband router that does not support Gigabit Ethernet on its ports......

I have a PS3, a PS4 and a Lacie Cloudbox NAS that do support gigabit Ethernet. They are all connected to the sky router, not directly to each other, so will only communicate at the slower speed of the router.

Ignoring at this time whether I have cat 6 cables, can I buy something so they can have fast Ethernet between then and just use the sky router for Internet, if you see what I mean ?

Thanks 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

You could buy a 1gb switch. Cheap as chips. Connect all your 1gb capable bits together and then connect at 100mb to your Sky router. I'm not sure how much traffic goes between the PSs and the NAS but you'd only benefit from the faster speeds locally.

Or get Gigabit adsl router/modem. Something with a bit of configurability can improve your connection speeds no end.

Mine is old tech now, billion bipac, but it means I can easily tweak the snr ratios and improve what is a really slow connection to something bearable. Would work even better on a connection which was half decent!

Just coz you are with sky doesn't hold you to using their kit! I think from memory they used to send out netgear dg834gt routers which are really old hat now, but folks are still using them even though there are loads of cheap enough options out there which could improve their connection no end.. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thumbs Up Exactly what I've done

I got more ports - I did it because my Virgin router doesn't have enough wired ports, but same idea

Many thanks.

I have a sagem router I believe, the one before the sky hub. The issue is you have to hack it to get the sky server logon, so makes changing to a non sky router harder. I may move to BT or Virgin for fibre broadband in due course....

I'm liking the switch solution. I take it that won't send local traffic to / through the router ? So could work without the sky router connected to prove the point..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

That's correct, only the traffic destined for the Internet will go via the Router. TCP/IP is a 'send and hope' protocol and relies on the destination device listening and grabbing the packets from your originating device. So, switch is the way to go Thumbs Up SDV8 AB MY 2019

You only need cat5e for 1gig surely so could save some pennies there as cat6 is beyond the 1gig spec and doesn't offer much more for what you pay sometimes Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Cat 6 cables are cheap these days. It's only when you get to Cat 7 that the prices gets a bit too much Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
