Trans Failsafe Mode

Hi All,

Have just had the trans failsafe mode kick in for the second time in 12 months. managed to get it plugged into 'all comms' with 'gear monitor 3 fault - general fault' showing up. On both occasions the failsafe mode kicked in after standing idle in traffic for sometime.
Would the above be a result of the gearbox overheating?
Would flushing the coolant system be a cure?

Many thanks in advance for anyone that can advise If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!

"standing idle"

Is that in gear, foot on pedal, or in neutral, handbrake on, or in park?

Can you replicate on driveway? Try in different gearstick settings etc. (D or R or P) ?

Any problems with selecting P ? (so that it holds on a slope) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Handbrake off (useless piece of kit from my experience), in park.

Have tried to replicate with no luck.

No problems selecting P although appears slow to engage D from R 1st thing?

Holds well on slope in D and P.

Box was rebuilt 15k ago (before i bought it), battery replaced 6mths ago. If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!

Often a blocked lower section of the main radiator. The Gearbox Oil Cooler comes off the main rad after this section so its best to properly flush whole system concentrating on the Main radiator bottom section which may be fubarred.

May not get to the weekend!

Just pulled up at the same set of traffic lights as before and the Censored jumped into failsafe again???(N with foot on brake). Pulled over, switched off and have managed to get into work.

Now thinking that it may be trans oil level? if it was over heating would it not give me a 'temperature fault' rather than 'trans failsafe'? If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!

Thanks for the response, I don't suppose that it could be the linkage?

I've read it on here that it can cause problems shifting between D and R. As I have the problem immediately after putting into D from sitting at junction from N position?

Just trying to look at all avenues Bow down If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!

UPDATE

Quick update on progress on the TFS gremlin:

1) Taken to transmission specialist and fault cleared once more (gear 3 general fault), said it meant that it was slipping in 3rd. Sadly their auto box specialist has passed away and they're no longer doing autos.
2) Oil levels checked and quality fine
3) Linkages checked and lubed (SWMBO did not want to take part Sad )
4) Battery replaced with Bosch S5 (had the hdc appearing the last few cold mornings on start up, so battery was on its way out obviously)
5) Booked in with the local Bosch Auto-service centre to undergo a full coolant power flush this week.

Does appear to be running better since 1-4 above but now I'm listening out for all sorts of things (even have the radio switched off for the first time). I'm getting paranoid Exclamation If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!

Further Update

Sadly Crying or Very sad no positive response to all of my fumblings so having her seen to by a specialist that will give her the deserved internal inspection.

Apologies: I must point out that this is the FF and not SWMBO. After her refusal to help out with the lube last weekend she's not deserved any inspections Rolling with laughter

Will update when returned with a new recon box and their findings. If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!
