does this price sound right ?

Phoned Mackies Transmissions today to get a price and arrange transmission service. price they gave me was £330 inc vat. however when i was doing the transfer box oil earlier this week i noticed my transmission has the common sleeve leak with some oil residue around the plug just next to the fill bolt. I explained this to them and asked how much this would add to the total bill. £414 is what he said the total bill would be to sort this along with the service.

Does that sound about right ? I thought it was a bit excessive as i read on here the new sleeve only cost £10 so that would mean they are charging £74 to fit the part ! I wouldn't have thought it would be any big deal while they have the pan off etc Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

You can get 20ltrs of the oil for about £120, original filter and gasket less than £50 and it would take you less than 2 hours lying on your back...

Plenty of threads on it including a how to in the WIKI...

why not do it yourself, nothing hard about it... Pete

I was considering doing it myself but the only thing that put me of was how do you measure the oil temperature when topping off the fluid to the correct level ? As I said in a previous post I have a infra red laser thermometer but that would only measure the temp of the plastic pan and not the actual oil.

Also mackies would be flushing the box when servicing it Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

The sleeve is a very cheap, serviceable part, and if they are dropping the sump anyway, it only takes an extra 60 seconds to replace Thumbs Up

Assuming they are replacing the filter, and not just flushing the gearbox...

It's different oil between the 5speed and 6 speed gearboxes. £23 a litre is still very expensive though
