Ok, so I have talked them all into a family skiing holiday in Les Arcs, which will be nice, also managed to wangle driving, also a boon as it is cheaper and almost as fast, plus we can arrive mid afternoon as opposed to evening on the first day and get lift passes and skis sorted!

Anyhoo, the big thing is what to drive down in!

There are a few choices, none of which look too reliable,

1. take the FFRR, and risk being left stranded in France
2. take the VRS and risk back ache and a migraine and being stranded in france (its 10 yeas old and has never broken so there is always a first time)
3. take the Hilux.......and get there and back in one piece in decent comfort, but probably get stuck in the snow and look like a berk, plus its due a catastrophic failure at some point soon too.

Leaning towards the FFRR, I have RAC europe cover so it should get recovered if all goes wrong. Will get it services and have the brakes stripped and cleaned before I go. Also need to check the Trans box level after having the doobry changed on it a few months ago. Is there anything else precautionary you guys reckon I should do? The 19" will go on as I have chains for them and they are wrangler all weather M + S.

oh...Or 4. Buy new FFRR and make it the most expensive ski holiday......In the world..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That's the way I'm leaning Alan. Will run it though the garage first though a bit of Tlc first should satisfy her, in any case it did 2 long France trips this year without too much of hitch, just a blown turbo hose and a set of knackered contaminated pads! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Take the RR (lightning unlikely to strike twice), have a 'last' hurrah and buy a newer one... Unless deciding to remain loyal!

Put the bikes in the FF and drive the FF. If it breaks down, cycle back - it's down hill!

Take the FF. You have to arrive in a certain amount of style  Travelling around in circles again.

We take the FFRR to La Plagne every year - I've never worried too much with RAC European cover

I don't know the Wranglers, but it's a long motorways drive, so I hope they are not too noisy.

Are you going half term week ? That's when we are going - the majority of French schools are off the same week, so it will be busy.

Saturday is typically changeover day and there are a lot of resorts close together - the road up into the mountains can be very slow from mid morning through the afternoon. We usually leave at Friday lunchtime, stay in a hotel in Lyon overnight, then head up the mountain early - it's only a couple of hours. We then ski/board all day and check in afterwards.

The same on the last day, we check out, the. Hit the slopes. We leave around 4 and drive to Reims for an overnight stop, before finishing the return leg on Sunday.

Saturday's is by far the best day in the French resorts as its really quiet on the slopes, IMHO the best thing about driving is getting those 2 bonus days

have driven down a few times in various cars last was to the 3 valleys a few years back pre FFRR. We are, all being well, arriving on 7th Feb and have booked an apartment direct with Pierre et vacances in 1950. haven't been to Les Arcs for a few years but last time we got the train down to Bourg St Maurice, at the time a friend had one of the apartments in 1950 on an option so we stayed in that for cheap, but from what i remember it was great for kids.

not expecting it to be quiet but I'm not sure it is french holiday that week as they had plenty of availability and 20% off, edit, stand corrected, it is hols time but they stagger it so only 30% of the schools are off that week.

Hoping to get all the ski gear and passes for everyone sorted on the sat and maybe get a quick ski in for myself while they settle in. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well I have both of those, a FFRR and a Skoda Superb 2006 Elegance. The Skoda is a work hack and I have little love for it but massive respect. It's on 174K now and aside from the routine servicing and one heater fan motor it's been good as gold despite the abuse I throw at it. No, it's not a FFRR but migraine and backache have never figured in the equation. It's comfortable, quiet a and eats up the miles.

So, if it were me I'd take the FFRR. No contest.

Just think about it. Why was the Citroen 2CV invented? So French farmers taking poultry to market wouldn't have to get chicken poo on the leather in their Facel Vegas of course. Good cars are for high days, holidays etc. Crap cars are work.

The superb would be a decent car to make the trip in, unfortunately the mrs has an octavia vrs which although not a crude car by any means is "sporty" (read noisy and firm) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
