Sounds lie you have got your work cut out for the while. Have a look at the threads on the android head units on here, they are a fairly direct replacements and fill the hole without a filler panel.

Thats quite often down to the wiring chaffing under the seat sir... Take the seat out (really easy) and check all of the connections underneath the seat whilst its on a bench upside down... Then check the condition of the wiring under the seat in the car for chaffing rubbing marks...

when I got mine, (2002 v eight) I bough it as a non runner, (separate issue) it also came with an airbag light. (ign on, light on, light off, light on permanent) I have RSW diagnostic, it was saying the battery pyrotechnic device was at fault, I changed it for new and it was still there and would not reset. sometimes it would show other airbag 'items'. I changed the battery, (properly) still same. I eventually took it to a an LR dealer (service type). not a main dealer...., just for a half hour diag session. they could not pinpoint it. (they knew the car from previous owner, and had told him to get airbag light looked at) I had to get it sorted, as it was now MOT failing on just that. it turned out, (by my surfing/reading/guessing) that the airbag ECU under the centre console was at fault. I got another on ebay, around £20 (Garuanteed no codes) but I think its cheaper than £100 new. and mine worked straight in. codes cleared instantly when reset. it think, how I understand it, that it reads and stores airbag issues, for crash data retrieval. so it might not be DIY resettable for obvious reasons. (but my dealer wanted to start changing 'devices') My car when bought, had no crash damage issues or water ingress. it was (just) an engine issue.

That's a cracking bit of advice, I'll buy one just in case and give it a try.
