2010 3.6 TDV8 - oil leak from front?

Hi

I parked up earlier and noticed a couple of spots of oil underneath the front (2010 3.6 TDV8), put it at full height and had a quick look underneath and it seems to be coming from somewhere above the front plastic undertray - the front crossmember is oily and you can see where it's spattered back across the bottom of the engine. The undertray itself has a few drips coming off it. It looks like engine oil (it's black and dirty like diesel engine oil!).

I'll try and get the undertray off tomorrow, but any suggestions on what to check, or is it just a case of having a look with the torch and seeing if I can see where it's coming from? Any common problems with these?

Thanks!

Jon

I have the same car and had to have the front power steering hose replaced due to the steel section corrosion.

I know you said it was oily, but check your PS fluid level.

Took the undertray off earlier - it's very hard to tell where the oil is coming from - the crossmember is oily, as are the pipes that run underneath the front of the engine, the PAS pipes etc

The highest point that I can see oil is by the casting that goes into the sump (dipstick or possibly a turbo oil drain?):

but it could be spray from a leaking PAS pipe or similar. The front of the engine also looks oily from the little you can see of it, but old dried oil rather than fresh. Lying underneath and getting someone to turn the wheels from lock to lock with the engine running doesn't show any spray or similar from the PAS pipes.

The 'wet' oil is black like engine oil, but doesn't smell 'sooty' like oil from the dipstick. The stuff in the PAS pot doesn't really smell of anything (and I'm not gonna do a taste test!!). Engine oil level hasn't dropped at all, PAS pot doesn't have a dipstick but if you stick your finger there's oil in the pot (but it's not to the brim!)

Any suggestions? Smile

Also - on the passenger side at the front, there's a plastic pipe that runs from the top of the front diff, along the front of the engine, round the serpentine pulley and on up. Is this just a raised breather? Where it runs close to the serp pulley it's touched and worn through.. Sad
