Can anyone tell me the tread depth on new Nokian WR SUV 3 tyres (255/60R18 or similar)?
I treated myself to an amazingly-priced spare set of alloys (thanks to EVOeng for the link, http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic28124.html) which I want to fit with winter tyres. I have almost decided on Nokians on the basis of performance (cf. other discussions on this forum) & price, but as there are no stockists in my area I am unable to see/feel/touch them for myself. I have tried asking Nokian themselves via their website (no reply) and the on-line tyre sites in France seem unable and/or unwilling to tell me. (The Service Commercial of one site replied “I cannot answer your question as our tyre depot is in Oignies whereas we [the Sales Support Team] are in Aix-en-Provence”. Good product knowledge, then ! Not. And they couldn’t be bothered to find out either …)
Perhaps I’m being anal, but a decent tread depth is an important factor for me. Anyone?

My wife has had them on her VW Tiguan for 30 months and 16000 miles. Just measured the rears at 7.5mm and the fronts at 6.5-7mmmm and all looking like new!

I looked at loads of alternatives but decided these were safest for my family. They really grip the road in Winter and summer she loves them would not buy anything else now.

SUV Winter Silica compound

Polished grooves
Together with the deep transverse grooves and the strong, arrow-like tread pattern, the polished grooves effectively remove water and slush from the surface of the tyre. They are effective at preventing treacherous slushplaning and aquaplaning.

3D Lock Sipe
For SUV drivers, the good handling of the tyre, even under extreme conditions, is an essential requirement. The 3D Lock Sipes spread from one shoulder of the tyre to the other, and they improve the handling of the tyre especially when cornering and avoiding obstacles.

The 3D Lock Sipes differ from straight sipes in that they support the tread block even as the sipe opens. This is due to the sipe's locking mechanism. Furthermore, the 3D Lock Sipes improve the durability and wear resistance of the tyre, especially under difficult road conditions.

DSI and WSI indicators
The tread surface is equipped with the Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) that is patented by Nokian Tyres and improves winter safety. The numbers on the centre rib of the tyre indicate the depth of the main grooves in millimetres. The numbers wear out as the tyre wears down. The snowflake symbol of the Winter Safety Indicator (WSI) remains visible to a groove depth of four millimetres. When the symbol wears out, the possibility of slush-planing, for example, increases substantially and, therefore, the motorist should purchase new winter tyres to ensure safety.

If anyone is interested, I've finally had a reply from the Nokian "Tech cust service" who tell me the "Grooive [sic] depth is 10.5mm". I'm having them fitted on Wednesday, so I'll update this if I find it's anything different. It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents. 'Steve' to my chums.

For the record, I’ve just had the Nokians fitted. Despite Nokian’s claim of 10.5mm, I measured the tread depth between blocks at ‘only’ 8mm. However, I guess that could be consistent with Gazellio and verydisco’s experiences.
My AT2’s, which are 5 years old and have done 34,000 km, still have 7mm of tread left out of the original 10mm (I drive like the old fart I am), so I feel I have been cheated out of 20,000 km worth of usage …
Having too much time on my hands, and being a bit anal anyway, I may well write to Nokian asking for their comments.
My first impression comparing the Nokian winters and the AT2 is that the Nokians are much quieter. The AT2 have a more aggressive tread pattern but at 5°C (for example) the Nokian blocks are considerably more supple. I know from experience that the AT2 are pretty good in fresh snow, so I look forward to testing the Nokians in a couple of weeks – as long as there is a dump between now and then as the southern French Alps are distinctly lacking in snow at the moment! It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents.
