It's the same gearbox, assuming you mean the L322.

Exactly the same gearbox in both Andy... & just the reason i purchased a 4.4TDV8 which has the 8 speed...

Why oh why they did not put the 8sp into the 5.0 as is in the 405 is beyond me!

i reckon that the 4.2 is probably the shout at the mo based on bang per buck!

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

The gearbox is the 6HP28, while the older 4.2 SCs have the 6HP26 gearbox. The new box is most likely improved over the older version.

There seems to be a misunderstanding about the 6HP26 that it is not a good box, that is incorrect. It is actually such a good box that there is very little experience even with the specialized autobox shops despite the fact that there are a LOT of them out there in many different brands of cars. The "common" problem is the 3-4 shift fault caused by solenoid EDS4 (if I remember correctly, check my gearbox problem post). This is a cheap fix.

The 6HP28 is an improved version (higher torque/power rating and hopefully improved solenoids as well) and I bet RRPhil can give us a more indepth opinion.

I would say that the SC engine seems to be virtually bulletproof as in I can't remember anyone having any issues with them here, contrary to the 4.4 BMW engine (VANOS, head gasket/cooling system), the TD6 (injectors and fuel pumps and other fuel system related issues) and the TDV8 (turbos etc.). I'm not saying they never fail but just judging by this forum the SC engine seems to have the least amount of problems (and the AJV8 4.4 as they are basically the same engine).

As for the 5.0 engine/FFRR, I feel that it is a much better car than the 4.2 SC I'm selling (2006 MY) but I'm not sure if the difference between a 2009 4.2 and a 2010 or later 5.0 SC would be worth the difference to be honest. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

according to rrphils chart, its a ZF 6HP26 in the 4.2 and a ZF 6HP28 in the 5.0, both six speed but different last digit...

the only problem i've heard of is the rattly sounding front engine issue which is a timing chains and tensioners problem.... ... - .- -.

There are no 7 speed gearboxes in any LR products.

No 7 Speeds that I'm aware of in JLR products.

Stan is correct there have been timing chain issues reported on the 5.0 SCs. A bit sad as that was the only problem the original AJV8 was a timing chain issue and it was supposedly resolved and is now re-surfacing sometimes. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

This is correct Stan, and something I had fixed on mine under warranty. It took the Dealer a week as they dismantle the entire front end of the car to do this work. Discovery 4 HSE
