my guess would be handbrake shoe retaining pin snapped/rusted away - that can give those noises |

Possibly, or it could be that you just need to drive forwards 100 yds with the handbrake applied to clear rust from the inside of the drums - give it a go!

You have to take the rear hubs off to change the back plates and that is a massive job on a car that age, the driveshaft will be in there for good (just about)
