Non Land Rover crank pully bolt removal- advice needed

I decided today that I was going to try and change the cambelt in my GF Hyundai Coupe. All was going well until I got to the crank pulley bolt. The instructions said, put your impact gun on the pulley bolt and crack it off or shock it off. Bloody thing will not budge, with impact gun and not sure what shock it off is.

Tried putting it in gear and put a breaker bar on it, brakes hard on and no luck, (think the clutch started to slip). Can't see any way to lock the crank and use the breaker bar.

So any suggestions on how to shift the fecking thing?

Just wondering if my compressor is up to it, I have an SIP 540nm impact gun, but it is running off an 8 bar Aldi compressor, do I need to upgrade my compressor? 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

8 barg from your compressor is fine - your biggest worry my be the couplers / hose etc that won't allow the flow.
Check the CFM requirements of your impact wrench and then see if you system is up to it - you'll struggle to get the necessary cfm through one of those coiled hoses for instance.

"Shocking it off" means just that - hitting it with a sudden impact so the inertia of the engines internals don't allow the crank to rotate too much.

As Stan says, check the engine rotation and make sure you try and turn the bolt / nut in the same direction as the engine normally runs.

Using a breaker bar will not give you any shock unless you have a very trusting "mate" who'll hold weight against the bolt / nut while you give it the biggest whack (just lower than his hands) that you can possible give with a sledge hammer Rolling with laughter

Good luck - but remember, you have to be able to tighten it again (break out is typically 150% of tighten torque so should be a tad easier).

BTW, in the past when working on a particularly obstinate E30 (323i) I put a 2' breaker bar on the bolt and rested the handle on a block of wood before engaging the started motor Shocked Hugely entertaining and very very risky but did the job Very Happy

Will check the CFM of the compressor as the impact gun always seems a little pathetic. maybe get some new hoses as I am using the ones supplied with the compressor.

Wasn't sure if the starter method actually worked or whether it was just an internet myth. maybe will try that (after checking engine rotation) 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

You want one of those sprung impact sockets.

My dad has one and it basically allows 1" of travel as you whack onto it but only has a left turning motion to get things off. You put the socket on it you need and while steadying it whack the end with a lump hammer.

Seems to do the trick most of the time and my theory is the shock and the twist is just enough to break the thread lock. Oh dont forget they prob put some locitite on that thing as well when new Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
