United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Zermatt Silver

I have bought a Cam-Lock and took it to an auto electrician to be fitted. (this is because I'm terrified of cabbaging a new L405). The electrician promptly told me all the reasons NOT to tamper with CamBus, that he wouldn't risk it, that something needs to be done, but he's not the man to do it.

Not very heartening. An off the record chat with the stealer techie said that JLR are more paranoid than most about adding to CamBus, and fear a slow battery drain as a likely issue with any addons.

Any comments Colin to make me feel better? Big Cry

Lots of my customers are having aftermarket immobilisers fitted... Like back in the late eighties early nineties... But it gives them piece of mind I guess...

Hiya scanner
I am sorry to hear you are so worried about fitting the CAN-LOCK and seem to have been put off.

Happy to help and thanks for posting your concerns

The problem is that the CAN BUS is a very high tech data bus that very few properly understand how it works at even a basic level. Tracing and fixing a fault on a CAN BUS requires a lot of knowledge, understanding, Time, expertise and looking through the proper wiring diagrams. It also requires having dedicated diagnostic equipment to find and resolve.

Sadly those without the requisite understanding will not admit that it is their lack of knowledge that is the problem, but instead portray the CAN BUS as some negative and magical voodoo like thing that should not be messed with for fear of being struck by lightening or something, citing their bad experiences with it as proof Whistle

The reality is however that the CAN BUS is a really good thing, which is why every manufacturer is now using it and your Auto Electrician might well be better off accepting this modern aspect and learning about it rather than putting down a product made by someone who so obviously embraces this technology.

Did he roll his eyes or suck his teeth when you mentioned Cyprus Rolling with laughter

Of course I appreciate that I am expected to have a positive perspective.

But please consider that if connecting third party equipment to the Vehicles CAN BUS's is such a bad thing, why is there an industry standardised connector provided for that very reason ?

I imagine that if this were a device in a box adorned with glitzy product stickers that connected to the CAN BUS via the OBDII Socket, no one would question connecting it. However that is not very stealthy, which is of course the entire point of the CAN-LOCK.

As for addons causing a slow battery drain. Any add on that has to remain active at all times, like an alarm, Immobiliser, tracking device, which LR now recommend, and even the Keyless entry module itself will take some power. Ensuring that a product consumes so little power as to be negligable yet is still able to spring to life is now a very common aspect and requirement that of course we have built into the CAN-LOCK.

When the CAN BUS is inactive, the CAN-LOCK sleeps and consumes less power than a digital watch Wink

Had one on my own Keyless Entry Sport for 18 months now, and as you can probably appreciate we have now supplied quite a few that are fitted to L494 sports, L405's, Evoques and now even Discovery Sports.

Just come across an interesting article that might explain how thieves are managing to open the doors to start with.
