Man maths help required to change or not???

Right gents help / advice required
My predicament is that my ff is a july 2007 4.2 s/c which O bought last November on 84k miles for £14k with two months Landrover Warranty. I replaced the warranty in Feb and have had it serviced and Motd at the main dealer.There are no faults showing at all and the paint work was clay barred prior to my buying it and is immaculate as are both sets of wheels. The previous owner replaced the side lights with leds upgraded the tv and phone system so all is good.
I had a new gearbox fitted by landrover courtesy of the warranty it is a great colour for me Buck Blue with cream interior.
BUT it has the 4.2 not the 5 .0 engine so there is the dilemma I am not that bothered about grilles or side vents etc and do about 20 to 25k a year but 5.0 are a reasonable additional cost SO do I change and risk getting something with problems but have the performance or stick with the one I have and upgrade supercharger pulley and remap????

i'm in a similar dilemma where i considered changing from my 2009my 4.2 to a 5.0 but the difference in cost is to much for me to justify it...i havnt driven a 5.0 but mine is sublime with enough power when you need it and a comfortable drive..
those with 5.0's say its a fantastic piece of engineering but so is the 4.2 and where and when would you use that extra 0.8 litres of power on our UK roads with all these speed restrictions,traffic and speed cameras etc... ... - .- -.

Totally understand Stan its a real dilemma and for me the fact that mine was so well looked after and immaculate condition makes it even more difficult and I was surprised at the price differential its almost double Sad

Oh come on, you are only looking for enough positive comments on the 5.0 to justify your new toy.
If you want it that much, buy it and try to buy it on the same conditions as you bought your SC.
BUT... Cool why?
Is it status, because of the neighbours, to moan all over it in the pub, to show off on the parking at work
Or because you think you will often need that extra power?
If it is just a wannahave and you have the sparecash, go for it.

I've not driven a 5,0 and, like many 4.2 owners, suffer the same dilemma.

My yearly mileage, currently, is the same as yours.

However, mine enjoys the pulley and remap upgrade and is appreciably quicker as a result. I can imagine a 5.0 being quicker still, but I also gather these lose a little of the aural burble that the 4.2 achieves so well. And I listen to the burble a lot. I rarely use the stereo.

The 5.0 offers, in my eyes, a better instrument / entertainment package and a moderately quicker powertrain with a notched improvement in fuel consumption. Like you, I really cannot justify the additional cost.

Even allowing for a 'significant' bill for potential repairs to failed components on a 4.2, it's hard to justify. A £5k bill is still considerably less than the cost to change.

I'd need to be in the right place (a dealer) in the right mood with the time from an encouraging salesperson to take a drive before I'd consider one. And even then, it'd have to be the 'right' deal.

If you want one, buy one. Don't analyse it. Do it. If you're at all unsure, step away. If you want to be convinced, drive one. Si. <This is my name.

So, speaking from experience of having had the 3.0 TD6, 3.6 TDV8, 4.2 SC and 5.0 SC (as well as having driven the 4.4TDV8, 3.0 TDV6, 2.7 TDV6, 3.0 SDV6 yadda yadda) I can categorically say that the 5.0 is like nothing else.

Last night I popped to my local town to grab fish n chips, it was a balmy evening, I had some windows down, and the sound of the 5.0 as you give it a short stab, it's just SO good, and it goes so well.

Have you ever seen this 4.2 vs 5.0 comparison video 0-100-0mph (albeit on the RRS)??

The difference is astonishing.

What kind of performace upgrade can you get from new pulley and remap ? and what are roughly the associated costs ?

I also have a 4.2SC and find it fast but like everyone I wonder about some more power.

@Sandyt: if you get a good deal, JUST DO IT! I can kick myself for not taking a deal that I was offered on a 2011 5.0SC albeit with 119000kms, but FSH.

Thus far I could not get anything close to that deal and has resorted to keep my 4.2SC for another year or so. In the meantime I'm adding a 6% SC upper pulley (waiting for it to arrive from UK), removed cats, and remap - hopefully getting close to 350kW.

Noise in the 5.0SC is totally different from the 4.2SC - 5.0 baritone whilst 4.2 more supercharger whine when you push it.

You raised the 'maths' point as a headline within this post.

1. If you would need to pay the same again, plus your 4.2SC for a 5.0, would that be getting you a 5.0 with similar mileage to your 4.2, which is an immaculate car that you know, that you've not had too long and reference which you can extend the LR warranty for £800 odd, without breakdown cover (a warranty that has so far served you well, e.g recent new gearbox)?

2. I understand that several hundred pounds can get the pulley/ performance upgrade done on the 4.2SC?

3. The 2010MY exterior conversion can be done professionally for in the region of between £3 and £4k?

4. If my understanding and arithmetic are correct re points 1 to 3, then for approx £5k as opposed to £14k, that's a fully fettled, warrantied, immaculate, FSH, completely upgraded 4.2SC (less the infotainment system) that should have enough power and charm to satisfy many people; and I've also interpreted from reading posts from seasoned professionals like Gary Elliot and CTC, that whilst people perhaps shouldn't commission the 2010MY conversion as 'an investment', there are good examples of people having pretty much got their conversion money back come resale time, if not that, then they are desirable to sell on.

Just some thoughts and questions specifically reference the 'man maths' aspect of your OP.

If the 5.0 is 'pulling' you though, apparently you won't be able to stop Wink Laughing
