Random Multiple misfire error message

A month or so back my EML came on, and it was due a service so Stratstone Notts looked it over. The error codes were 302, 304 etc and the description was "Random multiple misfires".

Their Technician said it was likely a sticking injector and to run the fuel low then put in a dose of fuel cleaner.

The EML was cleared and all was fine. I did what they said.

Then it came on again, and an independent garage got the same messages but they wanted me to spend £800 on all 8 new injectors, coils and sparks. I declined their kind offer. The EML went out of its own accord after about one week.

It has since come on again, no doubt the same message. Each time, the car runs perfectly well and the EML light only comes on when I start it up, never during driving, the car's performance is normal, no rough idling, it's just normal, except for the light.

Has anyone got any experience or ideas on what might be the root cause here? Discovery 4 HSE

Quick update:

Had the codes read again, same as before, PO302, 304, 306 etc.

Garage suggested swapping out the spark plugs as they removed them for inspection and they didn't look clever. this seemed a cheap option compared to coil packs. Process of elimination.

Since the fitment both myself and the tester remarked on how it felt smoother. Weird. It's also a bit zippier.

Will report in due course on longer term findings. Discovery 4 HSE

Not sure Stan. I know that the standard service intervals don't allow for swapping such items on a very regular basis though. I just did a search and found the following service schedule for 2010MY onwards, apparently they should be swapped at 105,000. I rest my case. Big Cry

According to this, the air filters should only be replaced every 60,000 miles or 4 years!

As it was just serviced, I replaced the air filters, it's had the front brakes done and now the sparks. If they were original they've done 63,000 miles. Discovery 4 HSE

I happen to think the servicing lengths for certain things on most of JLR cars are too long too Adam... We often find customers "pause a second" when told the price of a service from us! BUT... Take into account the cost of A, the extra fuel you use when filters are not scheduled to be changed on "that service" & B, the extra wear you put on components like diff's, gearbox, transfer box & even simple spark plugs & air filters!!!.........

Thumbs Up

Not sure Stan to be honest they are only referenced as LLR005253 and that does nothing on google.
Agree with Craig and look forward to working with an indi that will do what feels right even if it seems a bit of overkill - in all my years of Landrover and Jag ownership I have always "over serviced" my vehicles and they have all been surprisingly reliable Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

You bet that my next service is going to include gearbox/filters and spark plugs.
Plus coolant and belts of course. It is around 86k now.
Air filters, pollen filter and engine oil and filter were just done Smile.

That is ridiculous Adam that is way too long. But glad that you solved a big problem so easily Smile Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Stan,

I agree with you. When I had my old Series 3 Land Rover and did my own servicing at home the plugs and points, even the distributor cap, leads etc were all considered service items to be replaced as preventative maintenance and to increase performance. I know that cars and the components are far more advanced now but still....

LR's intervals for replacing these things is far too long. In the Owner's Manual it states you should check the air filter daily if driving in arduous or dusty conditions, not every 4 years!

I shall see how the performance feels and rates over the next few weeks, I doubt I will notice huge jumps in the MPG, you can't expect a 5.0 SCV8 to do much more than 18mpg, not the way I drive (according to Gaz!) Discovery 4 HSE
