MOT in France

Not necessarily Range Rover related, but just had an email at work from a british guy who has his UK registered car over here in Paris. His car is due for an MOT and he is asking if it is possible to get his car MOT'd over in France or if he has to take it back to the UK to get it done.

Anyone know if its possible??

Thanks in advance

the mot has to be done in the vehicles registered country ie the UK...
if you get a french ''control technique' then you might have problems getting passed with the left hand drive headlamps and even if you did manage to get a pass then the vehicle will still need a mot if driven in the UK..

a day trip to the Uk would probably be the best bet... ... - .- -.

He can always SORN his car, keep the English reg and do a CT in France. With that he can insure his car in France for a year

He should also check his insurance - most UK policies have a 28 day limit for overseas trips.

Weegie, if you try to get a certificat of conformity (ridicule but needed for that lovely idiotic French administration) it might take you more than 6 months (my Aston took me 7) my cars are registred in my name in the UK some have an MOT some have a CT nobody will have a problem with that as long as you can show you are in the procedure of registration in France. Insurance companies will accept you and by EU law the CT and MOT are accepted according to my insurance company here in France for that period. I agree with you if you say it is a grey area, but it is not illegal.

Robert, I agree if you are permanently exporting the vehicle (more than 12 months) but the OP seemed to indicate a temporary situation. If a permanent one then legally he should re-register.

I still disagree with the SORN approach as the free circulation of vehicles abroad is subject to them conforming to the requirements of the country whose plates they are carrying .

Permanent export should be by a V561 certificate of permanent export.

The problem with either method is that you cannot just go back to the UK for a short visit with the vehicle if either on a SORN or a V561.

Some CT centres are now refusing to CT a foreign plated vehicle unless a C of C is presented with it.

Anyway, hope you are enjoying this nice spell of weather. John

Just out of interest gentlemen "in the know", how does the CT system compare with the MOT in terms of stringency and discretion of the tester ?
I imagine they are very similar due to EU requirements ?

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

It is pretty much the same as the MOT. They do a dynamic suspension test (shuggle* the vehicle on rams) which I am not sure is done for the MOT.

The big difference is it is every 2 years instead of annually. Commercial vehicles (including some vans) have an annual emission test.

As for the discretion of the tester, it varies from tester to tester (some are jobsworths) but is still pretty stringent.

*a Scottish expression Very Happy John

The suspension test on rams sounds interesting - perfect for ancient Citroens ?

Probably not a good description but it tests the shock absorbers etc.

Although I have access to a four post lift, the one that they use in my local testing station is a source of great envy to me. It is a thing of great beauty. Sad Very Happy (Note to self: must get out more Very Happy ) John

Is this some kind of 'does it compress and come back up test' for the rams or a leakage test?

I always find it fun watching MOT testers test my Cits that have never done one before, spending ages faffing jacking it up to then let it back down again and for the car to be stuck on its ar53 for about 30seconds while it builds back up again, worse in my Activa really.

One complained that the rear was a bit hard one it. I just said it might be hard but it does the job Very Happy
Little did he know thats how their suspension fails for safety reasons but i had been waiting for the spheres for 2 weeks already Sad and by god are the wet patches they pick up on annoying! Top tip, if you have a leak anywhere that is a slow drip, wrap a towel round it and they cant fail it, just advisory it and thats all!!!

One day i'll have the time and space to make up one nice big skid plate for under the car and one for the engine bay top as well and laugh at the test even more Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
