How much crud can you get in a radiator???

Mine was running a bit hot... on checking with the IID tool, the temp gauge gets to "normal" ie straight up at about 75 deg, then doesn't move off normal until the temp gets over 115 deg.... so not very helpful really...

Now I know the BMW V8 likes to run hot but it was running at 110deg all the time... and last week whilst off roading got very hot indeed... so new genuine rad turned up today...

The old one is not the original and in fact doesn't look that old...

It's a pattern one made by Nissins, with no drain cock...

Tested the flow, both these are with a hose going full blast into the top of the rad...

Flow on old one

Flow on new one!!!

And finally I weighed them, the new one weighs 5.20kg the old one weighs 7.64kg....

So over 5lbs of crud in the rad Shocked Shocked Shocked

Anyway it's running as cool as a cucumber now so another job sorted.... Very Happy :D

Jeez, that's a lot of crud.

Did you also flush the engine?

Craig and I are like Clark Kent and Superman - although I'm not sure which of us is Superman.

To echo SMUTT, really enjoy reading your posts.

A good pal of mine had to change the rad on his 4.6 P38, took a lot of effort to remove the old one, he reckoned it weighed 10 kg more than the new one.
Just looking at your photos, am I correct in the fact that the original rad is the one without the drain cock? And if I am right in that assumption, is it a pattern part? Only it strikes me as strange that Land Rover would omit such an essential item. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Wow. Really illustrates the issues that a bit of crud can cause, especially if it goes unnoticed over an extended period of time, not that yours has....

What with the new rad and your Jag electric fans, one would hope you can forget any cooling issues for a while.

Another top job.

I think you should call your car "Steve" as in Steve Austin, as you are doing very well as Dr Rudy Wells Laughing

This really high-lights the importance of using the correct water and anti freeze mix. If you use methanol based anti freeze it will react with the aluminium in the engine causing all sorts of corrosion issues.
From memory the most famous fault was with the Jaguar engines, and would result in the cylinder head being eaten from the inside out.
And then there is the water issue, if you live in a hard water area you should really use de-ionised water, instead of tap water. Use of tap water will cause limescale deposits to build up in the rad, reducing its effectiveness and increasing its weight!
Oh and one last word of caution for all you off roaders, going through deep water, of the not clear (muddy) type, can block your rad from the outside. When the muddy water hits the rad it leaves a thin layer of mud on the finns, over time this can build up and block the rad. So if you've been in the mud up to your headlights, then wash the rad with a hose and then do it again! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Really enjoying your posts as well Pete. You are doing some serious and cool stuff to the car and great descriptions.

As for coolant issues, I know all about it. The 4.2 was filled with water (of course without my knowledge as the boys have coolant in the shop and should know to put it in but didn't) and I kept chasing the low coolant message till I was blue in the face. The coolant in the tank looked OK but wasn't.

Once both oil to coolant coolers blew within 1 month the truth came out. So full coolant in the engine after that but damn that was a costly problem in the end.

Hope you won't have any coolant issues as long as you have that FFRR mate Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Excellent post!

That really is a heck of a lot of gunk... As mentioned above I've only seen that kind of mess where either a component/cooler has failed, they've used water, or they mixed green-blue coolant with red/orange.

Steve

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Edit: Kurt/Craig, I thought you were both Superman and both Clark Kent on a shift pattern?

(splinters in my @r5£ from all this fence sitting)
