Ryan, yes, I agree. But the ORIGINAL Eleanor had those wheels and there's something deeply slealth-like about them that I rather like.

However, a Mach 1 weighs 1.5 tonnes and the performance figures are inline with that kind of power.

Bear in mind that many hi-po engines of that era were conservative to keep the insurance companies happy.

I'd tend to go with 285 as a realistic figure in this case.

By way of a conversation point for illustrative purposes, the other 351cu-in V8 that was offered below this was the 2-barrel version. Power was down to around 260 and it was always matched to the auto, so acceleration times suffered a lot. A good 2 seconds worse.

The 4-barrel that this one has revs better but has less torque low-down. It's more top-endy. The Boss 351 was better still with revised internals and another 30bhp or so, but those are getting silly on price even now.

I've yet to decode the VIN, but I shall should I get a viewing.

The '66 Charger, by comparison, has 330bhp from it's 4-barrel 383 and a Posi-Traction rear end (LSD, in other words). I'm more than aware that it'll all over the Mach 1 in terms of performance.

That aspect really appeals to me. I know that, in real life, the Charger in Bullit completely disgraced the 390 Mustang and they edited the scenes to deceive viewers into showing the 390 as the faster car.

I've always loved how much faster the Mopars were compared to those from Henry. But, Charger aside, it's the fast Fords that have always appealed to me.

Then again, road test reports from the time suggest Mopars were tricky to set up to be truly fast and often required retuning after only a few hundred miles to remain properly quick. I know that's splitting hairs, but it was a fact, according to the articles.

Ford, again according to the words written back then, were well built with good design and not 'built like crap' compared to any Mopar of the day.

My time in Australia eventually got me heavily into the Ford camp, too. I came to worship Allan Moffat and the Falcon GTHO Phase III, a car which also used the 351 engine. Si. <This is my name.

Those wheels do grow on you and they are sleek on the car

Sounds like the Charger is going to take the hit man because all that you write suggests you've bitten the Bullit, determined that you Mustang in there for a Mach 1

The Camaro has never struck a chord with me, I'm afraid. Coincidentally, it's the desire for a Camaro that the seller cites as wanting to sell the Mustang.

Anyway, it's all undecided as the seller is about to go on holiday and he could change his mind or be made an offer he cannot refuse. I've written to him expressing my keen interest in buying the car but I doubt he'll be in contact until he returns, more's the pity. He has told me that no-one will be buying the Mustang until I've seen it, but... I don't do 'patient' very well.

So I wait. I'm really not good at that.

An early 70's Trans-Am with the 455 engine would be lovely. There's one in Germany that's ideal, but £30,000.

And that's the problem. Prices are high and set to remain that way.

A later 70's 400 (6.6 litre) model with emissions tuning barely manages 200bhp! No wonder they're so cheap, still.

I did miss a gorgeous 'non-matching' Bullnose 455 a few weeks ago, though. Needed a little interior and engine work, but looked gorgeous and was for sale in the UK for a very reasonable amount.

You need to be sure before you decide so worth looking at alternatives if only to delete them from the process

On price grounds alone, I've eliminated the 455 Trans-Am.

A lovely 400 GTO Judge replica is for sale in Buckinghamshire at a dealer for £22,000, but it's not a shape that makes me want to get bigger pants.

Then there's the '68-'70 Charger which, unless they're restoration cases, are selling for £30,000 with many now twice that. A private, immaculate black '68 383 6-pack has just appeared for sale and is up for £60,000 in Sussex.

My preference is to buy as good an original as possible. There's plenty of chopped around models for sale, or indeed unroadworthy restoration cases, but prices are still strong for the latter.

There's a '72 Mach 1 in AutoTrader. Red. Shiny. £12,000. But I suspect it's a 2v engine and it's auto, so not a lot of go and it'd need work underneath and to the oily bits for that price. Plus the interior would need work, I suspect.

A Ford Galaxie appeals and there was a lovely orange ex-US celebrity one in Hampshire with a tuned 351 and Halibrand wheels, etc for £15,000 in April. It was for sale for ages, but that sold eventually. Si. <This is my name.
