United Kingdom 2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Santorini Black
Digital TV and DAB Radio in 2003 RR

Hi everyone, I just purchased my first range rover, 2003 model. It has the factory system, with sat nav, cd changer, and a TV option which doesn't seem to do much.
It also has rear screens, which again doesn't do much other than turn on.

After a bit of research, it seems the the TV is analogue and won't pick up signal anymore and the rear screens were connected to something at some point, maybe a dvd player.

Ideally, I would like digital TV, dab radio and a USB connection, so I can play movie files to the rear screen and a separate audio source so the kids can watch and listen, whilst I can still use the sat nav and music.

Again, after a bit of research, the bmws do a factory digital tuner, which is stupidly expensive, doesn't work whilst you drive, no dab and no USB connectivity.

Is there anything that is compatible with my system, that would do all of the above?

Thanks Ben

A quick run through the ICE section would have thrown up a few answers for you. This is the most popular mod at the moment:

Hi Joe, thanks, but no way am I making the mistake of going down the Chinese route. We got one of these for the wife's bmw 3 series and it took the audio shop 5 units until they got one that worked and then once it worked, it was horrid to use. Touch screen technology from the 80s and can't see anything on the screen when sunny.
Sound was terrible as well, no 50watts,more like 20 watts. Replaced with a single din pioneer unit and the sound got much much better.

I just found it to be too dangerous to use whilst driving, especially as it's the wife's car!

Also, I don't think there was an option to connect separate video outs for the rear screen, as I don't want to watch peppa pig whilst driving!

I'd like to be able to control what's being played in the back screens via the front. And then switch back to music and sat nav for me and misses.

Easy to do and fairly cheap with these:

Works well in mine and I use a usb stick for movies but it can be a bit fussy over video files but just recode them to mpeg-2. Handy being able to control what is viewed in the rear screens from the front screen using the remote Thumbs Up

In the '02 -05' cars you will need to have a separate setup for the rear screens. My car had this when I got it before I installed a PC to replace it all. Have a good scour through the ICE forum, plenty in there.

See my thread which should help you understand what you need, or just drive yours into an Audio place and flash the Access card Wink

The original equipment can be considered as quite pliable/flexible or downright awkward Razz .

That's way over my head Joe Laughing

The cable I used has rca in and out leads so dvb-t tuner went to ins and rear screens went to outs only drawback is mono sound.

Totally agree with you with the ones I have bought before, BUT, the latest version are basically an Android tablet and they have tripled the size of the processor, they are now totally sorted with very nice screens that have less of a shine than the original, the touch screens actually work as you would expect... It will also run DVD to rear screens and radio in the front... Pete

I bought the Android unit 3 months ago. I doubt things have changed since then. The car came with the dvd navigation unit, which works very well, compared to the non dvd versions I played around with.
The screens are in their and there is spare rca cables in the boot, which I'm assuming will be for them.

Spoke to a few audio shops, which most suggested getting the Chinese units, or add on digital box, but meant using a remote, which I 100% don't want. My brother got done for using a remote in his car before, as it looked like he was holding a mobile. 3 points and a fine.

Anyone bought one of these tv tuners? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Carphonics-F...19f39e0ee6

Looks like no remote is needed?

Sent him an email, will see what he says.

With the plug thing and tuner is the sound noticeably poor?

That looks like they replace the innards of the original analogue tuner, so all the steering wheel buttons and existing screen buttons should be used.

I have an original BMW hybrid tuner from a later X5 and I'm well happy with it.

This setup seems to tick all the boxes.

Looking at the listing, it's the same company I used for my BM54 Stage 2 Amp upgrade :

Excellent service and well recommended.

I got a reply back from Baris, and I have ordered one of his digi units. He is also adding 2 video and audio outs. Making everything plug and play. Job done, so I thought, until I saw his other upgrades.

I asked about ipod connectivity and he said to wait a month for his new ipod upgrade, as it will show track names and have full control, just like the TV. At the same time keeping my cd changer.
