My brakes are ok (not sh*t, not stunning) - typical TD6 brakes. I notice when reversing they're sh*t. I was backing a loaded trailer down a slope and they required a very big squeeze to stop - much bigger than if I was going forwards.

Can't work out why this is, although I'm not that bothered about it as it's not really a safety issue (I reverse slowly ).

Isn't that exciting - a new technical issue unrelated to air suspension, gearbox, flaps, steps, egr's, etc!

Any ideas?

The push me pull me conundrum... Easier to stop a mass when going forward with the car pulling the weight as opposed to the weight pulling the car when going backwards....
Trailer brakes generally only work when going forward.... Previously..

If you were reversing the trailer down a hill the trailers overrun brakes would not operate so the range rover brakes would be trying to stop the weight of the trailer as well as the car. If you were going forward the trailer brakes would operate and assist in slowing the trailer. I don't think there sounds like anything wrong.

You could be right. It might be something to do with the model year of the trailer. Or perhaps it is older than you think and has been face lifted in which case it could be some compatibility issue. I think you had better take it and get it plugged in to the computer for some diagnostics!

Bit surprised by the above observation. My brakes are really good ( bordering on stunning) and that's with partially worn discs and pads.

Does having smaller pads on the rear affect reverse braking? Think it may have something to do with it.

The rear brakes are also pressure regulated to avoid locking up when braking going forward so the braking effect isn't as great.
Also when reverse braking, the load on the ground and thus the brakes is far less than when braking going forward due to weight distribution of the car.

Do you have directional tyres I recon it could be that

Or maybe, because reverse is a higher ratio gear than first you have less vacuum to work the servo

The viscous fan is on backwards and the brakes are having to fight against the blow from it

I'm going to try disconnecting the trailer and trying.

Shouldn't affect braking performance but they are usually designed to have the wheels rotating forwards as that is usually what they do. It is theoretically possible to twist them off if reversing really fast (probably faster than the vehicle's capable of in reverse).

+1 for the overrun brakes on the trailer not working in reverse. Same with my caravan, takes more braking force if the trailer is trying to pull you down the hill..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Certainly used to get this with "proper" Minis and MG Midget Mk1 (both drums all round) without trailers (of course) in reverse. so guess the same physics may apply ? Not noticed it on my FFRR though (without trailer). .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

On drums, there's a bit of positive feedback when the shoes press against the drums when going forward and the brakes are applied. In reverse, they should be fine given the speeds involved. I don't think discs work the same way. I don't know, but I think their equally good in either direction.

Mick this is the problem, stop over loading the trailer and the brakes will work

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!
